Very good intro

This book covers an incredible range of topics - from scripting to graphics to using the GPIO pins. It is clear and easy to read with only a few minor typos. All of the code in the book is also available on the web site which saves a lot of typing.

If I had one complaint it would be that the book is truly an introduction in the first few chapters but seems to get a little thinner on the details later on in the book. For example, it spends a good bit of time explaining basic programming concepts such as syntax and logical constructs. And for most of the chapters it describes what is happening in the code line-for-line. But in the chapter on GPIO programming it says not to worry about how the function interacting with the hardware operates. This would have been a very good place to go into a lot of detail.

Very good Python introduction, limited Pi info

Learning Python with Raspberry Pi is a good Python beginner book and gets you started step by step with general computer knowledge followed by step by step programming. Software projects are multi platform which is good but very little is offered on utilizing the special functions or the Pi platform. There is a good amount of information about the Pi hardware and how it works but I expected to have see some good hardware interface programming examples to get started with a Python Pi hardware project instead of so much time on graphics which is prettly limited on the Pi platform.

Since it isn't listed in the product description I will post the Table of Contents which is available in the "Click to Look Inside" preview so it is easier to reference.

Book is OK but feel it is a little pricey.

Bought this book as an amazon ebook. Currently working through the programming exercises. It is relatively easy to follow and the examples are definitely interesting and fun. Examples use mostly API python modules for coding. It is always amazing how little code it can take to create a fully functional application using api components. The web browser app surprised me and works quite well. The writer certainly knows his stuff. The example code can be downloaded to save time but I like to manually enter the code, since you learn by doing. It also helps you understand error messages and how to fix typos, indent or syntax errors. I tend to miss colon's and have learned to watch more carefully when coding. The only complaint would be that I found the book a little pricey considering it was an ebook. I feel the publishers (not necessarily Amazon) are gouging the public by over pricing. I would have felt better buying the ebook directly from the author (eg self published through Amazon) knowing that he would get most of the profits instead of middle men overpricing, taking a large cut and leaving the author with a small fraction.

It was followed by other steps, in virtually every other part of our system having to do with power ---finance, politics, force --- the obligations and limits of conduct, the grounds of trust. All of them can be regarded, especially cumulatively, as important steps. All of them since (if not directly because of) this decision by what had once been a highly and deservedly respected Court, were down.

Stalk this one at your lesuire

Something is killing villagers in the River Kingdoms. Head Guards Ranger Elyana and her good friend the half-orc Drelm must gather a group of hunters to kill the beast and protect the town they have come to call home - especially Drelm who is in love with a very important lady. Joined by a mixed group of fighters, magic users, and the rare gunslinger, they head out on a mission of justice. But what starts out as hunting a beast takes a deadly turn as they learn more of the creature and makes Elyana think there is more than meets the eye, and could there be someone who is hunting them?

this book follows David Gross's formula of telling the story in the eyes of three people, Elyana, Drelm, and the gunslinger bounty hunter Lissette. I came to enjoy each character from Elyana's desire to help people, to Drelm showing that not all half-orc are monsterous brutes, to the past that Lisette has and how she came to be the person she is. The environments you travel through from the town, to the mysterious Sevenarches are well written and described beautifully, and the combat sequences are well done, from the simple sword swing to the use of firearms (first time I have read is this series of guns being used) and shows the advantages and disadvantages of each. I would say this book is a strong addition to the tales series and will love to see if he writes another book with Lissette in it.

A good addition to the Pathfinder Tales

This story seems to be a simple monster hunt, then gets more interesting. You may not get all the answers to the mystery you were looking for, and if you have played RPGs you may not care as to that. I was bothered by the villain having only a very loose reason for doing what they were, and the grander purpose was only hinted at.
I found the chapters from each of the 3 main characters to be mixed. I enjoy Elyana's, I was conflicted by Lisette's, I groaned at Drelm's. The author writes each chapter as seen by these 3 characters.
Elyana is perceptive and smart, capable and clever. Her chapter's reflect this. The seasoned Elf veteran ranger.
Lisette, well, I was expecting the iconic gunslinger Lisette from Pathfinder. No, for one, this Lisette is a Chelixian Human. Her motivations and development are fairly standard fantasy cliche. I forgive that to a degree. The cunning Human veteran Gunslinger.
Drelm. Drelm is an idiot. He is a good man, half orc really, and the book stresses that he is a good half orc facing prejudice enough, with the intellectual depth of a teaspoon. His chapters reflect his lack of thought, curiousity, and general Abadar worshiping Lawful Goodness. He is a skilled fighter and a loyal companion. Perhaps the author thought to write him as being a simple man, with simple goals..... in any event, the overall effect irritated me that i longed to finish his chapters to return to Elyana's and Lisette's.
Most of the rest of the cast is disposable monster bait, you don't care one lick when they die. Sad, but that is also a standard fantasy trait.
The action is good, the battles are vivid, Elyana attempting to work out the mystery, Lisette battling her past: these are all the reasons to read this book if you like the genre.

One of my newest Must-Read authors

I read his previous Pathfinder entry, (Plague of Shadows?), and this follows the adventures of Elyana Sadrastis and Drelm. What appeals to me, as a gamer as well as an author, is how well Mr Jones writes about groups of adventurers and their inner drama. And I don't mean drama in a bad way! Once again, a group of blades and magic-users set out under Elyana. They set out to hunt a beast marauding the countryside, but there are plenty of secrets inside the group as well. They may very well be their worst enemies! As another reviewer said, this is the first time I've read muskets and flintlock pistols introduced into the novels, and it was done well. Several new characters are introduced which could very well star in their own sequels.

There is a lot of action, suspense, and edge-of-your-seat anticipation. There is, perhaps, one plot twist too many, but enjoyable nevertheless.

I suppose this book is meant for an academic audience, but it is a very easy read. The book shows a different Islam than the one we most see on the television: the world of dreams. It was most fascinating to learn how important dreams are in Muslims' day-to-day lives.
Edgar found that dream incubation (called Istikhara) is used widely to help Muslims make important life decisions. The book tells how this incubation is done, how Muslims connect it to Muhammed and their faith, but it also has an interview with someone who professionally practices this incubation, in order to give advise to others. The interview is written down quite literally, which is very enjoyable to read.
More political is the part of the book in which the author discusses the function and meaning of dreams in the formation of terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. It is especially eye-catching that Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar both act almost like prophets, as they hold their dreams to be revelations from Allah. Also, the dreams of certain known terrorists are documented and I learned how they might have interpreted their dreams as signs of the need for terrorist action, and in line with the will of God. This makes the book very contemporary, and the dream a tool to be reckoned with.
The only downside to this book is the lack of historical background. There is no firm introduction into Islam, and the author clearly presupposes some knowledge about the different Muslim groups. But I suppose I could read that elsewhere, and it does not make the book difficult to follow. Thus, the book focuses on the dream in a very broad perspective (it even has a section on the dream's place in Western traditions) and it is refreshing to read about an unknown, but clearly important, aspect of one of the largest religions in the world!
