A good book for a great class

I used this text for a one semester course on Group Theory in the spring of 2007. It's a great text for reference, but time is required to really grasp the concepts. I wouldn't recommend it as a book to teach yourself with, but with a good professor on your side it's a valuable asset. Another interesting (I'm not sure if I would consider it positive or negative) thing about this book is that problems are not merely examples of material covered in the text, but important theorems are also assigned for the students to prove on their own.

A wonderful text.

Concise and wonderfully coherent, this book isn't filled with "fluff" such as dumb examples and spoonfed advice. Clearly targeted for a mathematically inclined class of undergraduate modern algebra students, you will find the immense amount of knowledge and the price of this book to be absolutely pleasing.

About the Author
Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) is the author of more than fifty books, including Night, his harrowing account of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. The book, first published in 1955, was selected for Oprah's Book Club in 2006, and continues to be an important reminder of man's capacity for inhumanity. Wiesel was Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, and lived with his family in New York City. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

The Night

Night is a painful and harrowing story about the madness and the evil that darkened Europe during the Second World War. Elie's story begins in Transylvania in a small Jewish neighborhood where Elie and his family live, unknowingly, on the brink of terror.

Elie, his family, and community are captured, shuttled into railroad cars, and transported to Auschwitz, Nazi Germany's largest concentration camp. So quickly turns the fate of Elie and his family that they disbelieve their circumstances even as they witness people being conducted en masse to gas chambers and crematoriums. The weak are killed. The strong become industrial slaves, entitling them only to hope for another day and a slower death.

Elie survives Auschwitz and Buchenwald, outliving both his mother and his sister. But Elie still has his father. Sensitive and intuitive, he notices that many fathers die after losing their loved ones. Elie realizes that if he were to die, his father would soon follow. Elie tells himself that he must live in order to give his father hope for living.

Elie does eventually live to see his father die in an infirmary, emaciated, exhausted, beaten, spiritless, and vulnerable like a child.

While his father's health is still in decline, Elie daily brings half his ration of bread to him, but that would not save his father from the darkness. A German soldier beats the last bit of life out of his father while he lay prostrate on the edge of death. "Elie," his father exhaled with barely the strength to whisper his son's name as his last word. Elie, motionless, unable to utter the words in his throat, confronts the guilt of being unable to help his father. How could he allow the soldier to beat his dying father? Why was he too afraid to cry out to answer his father's call? So helpless against the growing darkness.

Elie is most vulnerable when contemplating a world without God where darkness prevails. How can we, he asks, witness thousands burned in crematoriums or children being shot, thrown into a pit, and buried without losing our belief in a loving God? How can God himself ignore such evil? Where can we find a place in such a world for the Torah, the Kabala, and belief?

Yet, in a world hostile to belief and hostile to life, Elie witnesses and shows us himself that hope and faith do still sprout up like grass through cracks in the sidewalk, or, more appropriately, like moonlight through cracks in the curtain. The Night is dark, but not pitch-black where yet lives one sensitive soul.

This is a must read - for everyone! A real, raw and riviting account of Ellie Wiesel's personal experience during the Holocaust. Starting when no one believed the pending danger of war... to the formation of ghettos and finally life in a concentration camp. His Nobel Peace Price Acceptance Speech at the end of the book is an important bonus! We must NEVER FORGET... Ellie's account will help.

GRIPPING!

What an emotional ride. I've been a Wiesel fan for a great many years and this book most assuredly did not disappoint. He had me from the opening page and I found it difficult to put down. Young and old alike need to read this Trilogy. I am certain, from speaking to many 20-somethings, that they cannot relate and find it difficult to believe that such things could ever happen. Wiesel gives you three different stories, all of which are clearly different with no relationship to the previous story, but then again, they DO relate. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

Dr. Frederic (Ric) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. His publications include journal articles and contributed chapters, technical reports, and magazine articles. He is the lead author of six other undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, and has a feature column, “Back to Basics,” in Physician License and Practice Today, a quarterly publication for medical students and residents. He is currently affiliated faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and remains connected with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini has been active in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for 15 years, and was a member of the committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is now a President Emeritus of HAPS after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2004—2007. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Australia/New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Hawaii Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists.

 

Dr. Michael J. Timmons received his degrees from Loyola University, Chicago. For more than three decades he has had a strong commitment to teaching nursing and pre-professional students at Moraine Valley Community College. In 2005—2006 Professor Timmons was honored with the Professor of the Year Award by Moraine Valley College and the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development for his outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership, and student learning. He was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Illinois Community College Board of Trustees. Professor Timmons has authored several anatomy and physiology lab manuals and dissection guides. His areas of interest include biomedical photography, crafting illustration programs, and developing instructional technology learning systems. He chaired the Midwest Regional Human Anatomy and Physiology Conference and is also a national and regional presenter at the League for Innovation Conferences on Information Technology for Colleges and Universities and at Human Anatomy and Physiology Society meetings.

 

Dr. Robert B. Tallitsch received his Ph.D. in physiology with an anatomy minor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the ripe old age of 24. Since then, Dr. Tallitsch has been on the biology faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and Kinesiology. He is also a member of the Asian Studies faculty atAugustana College and teaches a course in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In seven out of the last nine years, Dr. Tallitsch has been designated as one of the “unofficial teachers of the year” by the graduating seniors at Augustana College. Dr. Tallitsch is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Association of Anatomists, AsiaNetwork, and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Augustana College, Dr. Tallitsch has served as a visiting faculty member at the Foreign Languages Faculty at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology (Beijing, PRC), and the Foreign Languages Faculty at Central ChinaNormalUniversity (Wuhan, PRC).

Anatomy & Physiology At Its Finest

I am currently using Marieb's 6th Edition text in my introductory Anatomy & Physiology course, and I couldn't have found a better aid had I tried. From cover to cover, this book is packed with a plethora of information. Though it may seem as if the book contains too much to take in upon first glance, the key is to read an average of about 7 pages a night and to take notes as you go along since each page is filled to the brim with detail and vocabulary. To put it simply, each chapter is about 30 - 45 pages long on average. Each page contains either a sea of vocabulary, diagrams of the human body, or oftentimes both. Aside from all of this, the fact that it is so in-depth (and sometimes complex with its scientific jargon) is what makes this book suitable for any anatomy class. The CD ROMs (if available w/ purchase) are also a great aid as well since they provide explinations focused on each individual topic in the chapter. There are also provided links to internet sites and quizzes to help sharpen your memory of difficult concepts. All in all, this book is nothing short of incredible, and will surely be helpful to anyone whether it be a college student or a student of a graduate school using it as a refresher. Very strongly recommended.

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

I bought the book the first time because I had to. I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing. Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester. MISTAKE! About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it.

If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it! What a marvelous book!

It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK!

Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want.

I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere!

Omits important concepts

The book is a nice way to get started with Android development on Xamarin platform. It provides concise overview of the Android platform and has clear instructions for setting up development environment. It also goes through building a small application so the readers build a simple but working application.

However, the book omits too many important concepts in order to qualify for a good book. The most important one is fragments. In order to build even a simplest app you need to have a good understanding of fragments. Fragments are also required for building tablet optimized apps.

The book also gives a bad advice for using configChanges which as explained at [...] is a bad thing to do in most of cases. Instead the correct approach is to use Fragments and retain an instance.

All in all the book provides a very general overview of Android development and if you are serious about building Android apps (either with Xamarin or other platform) you should also read another book for a better understanding of Android platform.

Great first step into the world of Xamarin.Android

I really liked how the book started out with an introduction to the Android platform and some technical insight into the architecture of Xamarin.Android and its integration with the platform. It gave me a nice foundation to build upon during the remainder of the book. The author decided to organize the chapters around a single application, building it from start to finish, while gradually incorporating new features. I found this approach engaging and easy to follow by building that same application while reading.

For a book targeting existing C# developers, it started a bit too slow in my opinion, spending too much time on the basics if IDE. Even though Xamarin Studio is being used, it is similar enough to Visual Studio and shouldn’t require much attention. Once that was out of the way, the chapters nicely focused on individual Android specifics, such as building the UI, handling the navigation and working with sensors. These subjects are what .NET developers really need to transition to the new platform and the book does a good job at it. The book concludes with some basics about application deployment; again very useful for those, not already familiar with the platform.

There were a couple of topics I missed in the book. In particular more information about testing the applications on actual devices and some guidance on how to best take advantage of existing resources for Java Android development when working in Xamarin. It would also be very useful to include some recommended development practices for reusing code between platforms and handling Android specifics.

Nevertheless the book is a great first step into the world of Xamarin.Android for a seasoned .NET C# developer with no previous development experience on Android. It’s definitely enough to get you started and makes it much easier to decide whether this is the right way to build Android applications or not. It certainly convinced me to use Xamarin.Android for my first Android application.

Warning: No Chapter Links, and make just wet your appetite.

Other kindle tech books contain helpful links to the beginning of each chapter. For the PC viewer, these links are available in the contents tab of the black toolbar, usually on the left hand side of the page. These links make navigating through the book easier than always going back to the Table of Contents at the beginning of the book.

This book also seems rather short. I have owned this book for only 24 hours, and I am already 43% through it. I am not a speed reader, and I have been doing plenty of other things as well. The first third of the book is devoted to "Getting Started". The writing style is easy to read, and looks reasonable, but so far I haven't seen much depth, and make leave you wanting for more.
