I wish I would have bought this when I was in Civ Pro I, I got it when I started my semester of Civ Pro II. Breaks it down in a way that easily understandable. Freer is great and this also is a must as his intro was very informative as he explains the style of law school learning, and why they teach it the way that they do! Absolutely phenomenal!

easily the best supplement I've used in law school

easily the best supplement I've used in law school. Not only does Freer write in an incredibly concise, simple, easy-to-undestand manner, but this outline is extremely well-organized. Was absolutely invaluable to me in outlining for civ pro I and II. Civ Pro is challenging material, I honestly wouldn't have gotten through it without this supplement.

About the Author

John Lannon is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he developed the undergraduate major in professional writing and later co-developed the M.A. program in professional writing.
He has also taught at Cape Cod Community College, University of Idaho, Southern Vermont College, and University of Strasbourg.
He has authored and coauthored five major textbooks in business communication, rhetoric, and technical communication, book reviews, filmstrips, and environmental documents and instructional software. He is the recipient of an NDEA Fellowship and Fulbright Lectureship. He holds a B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His initial training and work was in biomedical science and technology with the USAF. He has served as a communications consultant for various companies and government institutions. He worked seven years in medical laboratories.

Laura J. Gurak is professor and founding chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota. She holds an M.S. in technical communication and a Ph.D. in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is author of two books from Yale University Press (1997, 2001), the earlier of which was the first book-length work to study online communities and Internet-based social actions. Gurak is also co-editor of several edited collections and author on numerous conference presentations and papers; she is a recipient of the Society for Technical Communication’s Outstanding Article award. Gurak has authored and coauthored five textbooks in technical communication published by Pearson. She has worked as a technical writer and communications consultant for various companies and organizations.

extremely useful

I have rented this book but I am thinking about buying it despite its large price. There are so many useful and practical things in this book and I am not just saying this. Most of the time I only rent my books because most of the time I know I will only use it one or two times and the rest of my answers for my classes can be answered by google. This book is filled with tons of practical information that you can use in numerous situations for ex resume's, memo's, cover letters, instructions, definitions, brochures, and letters in general. The information in this book helped me get two job one as a supervisor and another as an office assistant (i'm only 20) and I have only had it for a few months. If your are thinking about renting this book and do have the money to buy it i highly recommend that you buy it to save yourself the trouble of deciding to buy it after rented it. whatever is your original intention you have for this book is well worth ( that is if your getting it to learn from it) if you are looking for fuel for a fire i would recommend something else that is cheaper like dried out pine needles though if it must be a book i would recommend twilight.

Clear and well organized. Some of the information might seem fairly obvious, but if you wanted a reference book or were taking an introductory course on technical writing [or any formal writing] I couldn't tell you any problems that I had with it. Generally clear and well laid out, the writing isn't dull. It does a good job of exhibiting the ideals and practices it espouses in each chapter and section; I can't really ask for more in a book about communication.

Concepts like religion and philosophy are concerned with those questions and try to provide answers to them. Nevertheless, there are still no satisfying explanations. This is due to the fact that "our actual lived experience has no form or unity in itself, but is full of contingent rubble, accident, and unsystematized detail which may resist our attempts at unity" (Antonaccio & Schweiker, Human Goodness 111). As our world is contingent, it cannot be completely understood. Consequently, we should accept its contingency instead of denying it by trying to find an explanation to everything. The stress ratio between contingency and necessity is also the theme of Iris Murdoch's first novel Under the Net. Throughout the novel, the protagonist Jake Donaghue searches for his own identity and for a master theory which is able to explain the world (cf. Porter, Leitmotiv 379). In the end, he realizes that he has to change his attitude towards contingency. In the following, I will try to find reasons for the change of Jake's attitude, and I will describe the consequences of this change. In order to be able to do this, I will first provide a definition of the term 'contingency' and place it in the context of philosophy in chapter 2. Afterwards, I will explain some essential aspects of contingency in the novel in chapter 3. In chapter 4, I will have a look at Jake's changing attitude towards contingency in the course of the novel in order to, finally, be able to find reasons for the change and to describe its consequences in chapter 5 and 6.

Buen libro

Se trata de un texto que ordena algunas ideas que son más sentido común que grandes descubrimientos. Se le puede sacar provecho, aunque considero que no son "17 maneras" como dice el título, pues hay variaciones de una misma idea. Igual lo recomiendo pese a que no es de gran profundidad. Se le puede sacar provecho a buena parte del contenido.

Es libro facil de leer, ameno y que motiva al lector a seguir adelante y a poner en practica todas aquellas recomendaciones y sugerencias que el autor da para el fortalecimiento de la autodisciplina.

This guide to creating optimal connections with others is an excellent follow-up to THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, which sounded magical in the hands of voice pro Hugh Gallagher. In this production of his latest book, the author's lifeless reading is clear and sincere enough to not get in the way of the lesson--a sparsely worded primer on neuro-linguistic programming. It's well-organized instruction, full of detailed information on the three conditions for connecting effectively, the four communication styles, and many other ideas for improving communication with others. Though some may see the techniques as mechanical or manipulative, the audio will help many become more sensitive to other people's signals and work a little harder to connect with them effectively. Michael J. Losier was introduced to the subject of Law of Attraction in 1995 and became a certified NLP practitioner. A faculty member of the Law of Attraction Training Center, he grew up in a blue-collar community in New Brunswick, Canada, and now makes his home in Victoria, B.C., Canada.

Michael J. Losier, author of LAW OF ATTRACTION, has written a follow-up to that work, LAW OF CONNECTION: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships. In this new work, Losier uses four different communication styles and suggests a how-to in applying them to build or repair rapport (a connection) with others. Whether you need help in developing and repairing relationships in your personal or professional life, Losier provides a common-sense approach that will improve your relationship skills.

The four NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) styles are: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Digital. He even provides a self-assessment test to determine which style your own communication falls into. I seemed to be a combination of both Visual and Kinesthetic.

Losier states that it is a matter of knowing and recognizing what style the person you are communicating with uses and adapting your own style so you can better understand the other person. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Words, mannerisms and attitude all go into communicating with others. I remember when I volunteered for the Make-A-Wish Foundation who had the delightful job of talking with children to learn of their deepest desires, I would sit on the floor, sit with them on their beds, whatever. My goal was to get down to their level so they would open up and talk with me more honestly. It works with children and it works with adults. What Losier is saying here is that one has to understand where the other person is coming from before they can communicate effectively.

This is a good book with practical advice and methods that you can use in your everyday communication. It would be a good work to have in your library for future reference. We can never learn too much about communicating with others. Our own survival depends upon it.

Disappointed...

Unfortunately, there is nothing new in this book that hasn't already been outlined in much greater detail. I've known about the 4 personality types for almost 20 years. What I've known (and what is certainly true of myself) is that most people don't fall squarely into 1 personality type. I am straight down the middle between two types. Not to mention, trying to fit someone into a type without giving them the opportunity of testing for accuracy, can become a waste of time. I like the author, just not this book. I waited and waited for this book to come out, spent good money for it, and realized that there is nothing different, innovative or even interesting here. The book is full of nagging details and rules. Too much difficulty, and too much time required to get it all down. I want to spend time enjoying myself, and connecting to others in ways that are enjoyable. Not making it a tedious, technical and limiting process. Sorry, but this is my honest review.

Fantastic Book - Connect and Communicate Better

Michael Losier is a fantastic teacher and author of another great book on Law of Attraction. His new book "Law of Connection" is a great companion book.

I learned so much from the Law of Connection. Great Techniques to communicate better and if you want to improve your rapport with co-workers, family members and friends, this is the book for you.

The most valuable information for me was learning about the communication style, how to identify them and how to address each of them for better communication and connection.

Great value, great learning and a great book
