A Review of Elizabeth Chin's Purchasing Power

When faced with the concept of "Black Kids and American Consumer Culture," I immediately turn my thoughts to the image of African American males killing each other for a specific brand of basketball shoe. Conversely, Elizabeth Chin defeats this myth of "combat consumerism" in her recent ethnographic study Purchasing Power. By studying a group of young African American children in Newhallville, Connecticut, Chin develops and explains a new brand of consumer culture that many previous anthropologists fail to recognize. Chin's research contradicts the stereotypical images in society and those portrayed by the media. She defines a new image of African American youth consumer culture-one that goes against commodity fetishism and the need for brand name goods. She discovers one that deals with the harsh world of being poor and black where opportunity and survival are major factors of consumer culture. Chin demonstrates the complexity of this issue by displaying how it is woven in with and affected by society. In this way, she relates consumerism to social injustices, race relations, class diversity, gender differences, cultural baggage and social relationships. Thus, Elizabeth Chin's book Purchasing Power is an informative and profound piece that intrigues the reader with an alternative image of Black Kids and American Consumer Culture.
Throughout her book, Elizabeth Chin does a tremendous job of blending anthropological research information (both others' and her own), and her engaging style of prose writing. This is evident from the onset of the book. In her first two chapters, Chin not only effectively conveys the purpose and results of her work (pp. 4-6), but also does so in a way that the reader is intrigued by the personal stories she tells about the children she interviewed in Newhallville. Her ongoing connections between theories and real life issues with Asia, Natalia, and Tionna are especially strong at the beginning of the book. In this way, readers are compelled to not only understand Chin's idea of the consumer sphere as a medium for social inequality (p. 23), but also to learn and discover what consumer life is like for the specific children interviewed.
In chapter two, Shadow of Whiteness, Chin briefly relates several different ideas from theorists such as Marx, Willis, Genovese and Fisk to her work. For some readers who are less familiar with these pieces, this section might seem somewhat confusing and a little burdensome. In this situation, more background information on the main ideas of the theorists' works would have been helpful. However, one must understand that Chin's overall purpose of the book is not to explain previous anthropological research, but to explain how her participant-observer approach to her ethnographic study of Newhallville children is important to consumer culture.
Chin's Shadow of Whiteness chapter is also very strong with the discussion of similarities between slavery and present-day consumerism. Chin illustrates how current stereotypical attitudes of black consumption have been deeply rooted in society since the time of slavery. Her discussion of slave fashion (pp. 39-41) is especially powerful and affective to her argument. Chin could easily build upon her ideas in this section and create a more in-depth anthropological comparison.
A final section in chapter two that was particularly strong was the analysis of "combat consumerism" and how society feeds on hyperbolized media stories and fraudulent police theories. Chin states several stories of juvenile violence where the media has portrayed the youth criminals as extremely brutal because of trivial material goods desired. Chin's reaction to this societal phenomenon is valid and influential in her overall argument of the book. Chin forcefully conveys her point when she writes,
The understanding that kids like those profiled above are somehow typical combat consumers not only misreads their consumer patterns at material levels but misinterprets the social impact and genesis of these patterns. It is a portrayal tapping a particularly insidious American myth: that the poor are highly susceptible to commodity fetishism, that they are addicted to brands, and that they are willing to acquire expensive things even at the cost of their own (or someone else's) health and/or well-being. Connected to this idea is a whole rat's nest of assumptions about poverty, money, and consumption: that the poor are poor primarily due to their own lack of discipline and self-control; that the poor do not know how to economize or prioritize expenses; and that the commitment of the poor to consume somehow ends up costing "us," whether through crime, welfare, dependency, teenage motherhood; that these depravities lead to murder, drugs, sex crimes. (pp. 56-57)
At this point in her book, Chin returns her focus to her work with the Newhallville children. A common theme begins to come forth throughout the next few chapters. Chin does a tremendous job of demonstrating how social relationships influence consumption. This is first evident in her section on "School Lunch," and later in the accounts of shopping sprees where children decided to spend money on family members. These sections have vast similarities to previous anthropological research on kinship and reciprocity, especially those who have completed fieldwork like Malinowski's research on the Kula. Chin could have enhanced her argument by examining the similarities in the research. In this way, Chin could have been able to generalize that the young African Americans in Newhallville are not a special case of consumer culture, but share similar characteristics of other cultures and societies.
As briefly stated in the previous paragraph, the idea of generalization seems to be one point that Chin fails to address adequately in her book. Although her research focuses on Newhallville children, it would not be out of her anthropological context to try and generalize from her results. Since she fails to sufficiently generalize her ideas, the sub-title of her book is resultantly problematic. Chin blatantly states that Purchasing Power will pertain to "Black Kids and American Consumer Culture." With Chin's choice to write specifically on black Newhallville kids, she consequently should not place them in the category of all black kids without stating the possible similarities or differences.
Further research topics that should have been considered in Purchasing Power that would have enhanced the overall argument would have been to interview different ages of children. The choice of using third and fourth grade children might have been a slightly young age to examine. Unlike the Newhallville children, I personally grew up in an upper-middle class family in a middle-class community. However, at this age I did not really understand consumerism and what I truly desired. I found myself purchasing many material goods for other people, similar to the children in Chin's study. Chin possibly decided to use this age group because this could be a truer form of consumer culture, one before society was able to taint consumer choices. An older group of children might have been affected more by society. In either case, using different age groups would still be an interesting anthropological research topic to consider.
One final idea that would enhance the study would be to examine how a child from a socioeconomic situation like Newhallville would react when placed in a different socioeconomic position. For example, would his or her consumerism change when placed in the care of a family who was from a higher-class community? Would the child then begin to find commodity fetishism and the need for brand name goods important? Today in my small town community of Lewistown, Pennsylvania, many families host foster children. It is an amazing phenomenon to witness how children from lower class cities adapt to the consumer culture of the majority middle class population. They begin to shift their priority of buying necessary, conservative items to buying higher-priced brand name goods.
Overall, Elizabeth Chin's recent book Purchasing Power is an intriguing and thoughtful book that displays a different type of consumer culture. Unlike many previous anthropological studies and the media, her research shows how commodity fetishism and brand name goods do not dominant lower socioeconomic children of Newhallville, Connecticut. Instead there is often a great deal of prioritizing and economic discipline with their consumer choices. Furthermore, the social injustices, race relations, class diversity, gender differences, and social relationships around them shape their consumer culture. Chin uses an informative, yet almost amusing style of writing that effectively develops her argument. Although there are several areas in which her book could have been stronger, her ethnographic work with the children is tremendous and well worth the reader's time. Definitely a good read!

I only purchased this book because I needed it for my intro anthropology class, but after reading it, I've decided to integrate into my personal book collection instead of selling it to another student. It isn't the most life changing book that I've ever read, but it does do a great deal of exploring the dynamics of agency and privilege within the lives of the children that it follows. Furthermore, it opens up a broader discussion of how these two concepts work in the lives of black people and lower income people as a whole in relation. Everyone should read this book, whether they're an aspiring social justice worker or if they don't believe inequality exists. Either way, it will offer you a broader perspective toward how you view the lives of others in the world and how you view your own.

Wish I had this months ago

The first thing I noticed when I got this book was how much larger it was than the first edition. Next was that it covered quite a bit more. HSRP, Security, IPv6, MPLS just to name a few. It's straight forward, too the point. Not a ton of explanation so if you want to know WHY something works, this isn't for you. If you want to MAKE it work then pick this one.

Excellent Router Configuration guide...

A book that resides outside of the often-essential Cisco Press series of books, Cisco IOS Cookbook delivers the goods. I'd like to see more coverage of Ethernet switching, which is a huge part of Cisco's business (and many modern Cisco Catalyst releases run IOS now). Communication between Ethernet and Token Ring is fully covered, however. Otherwise, this is an excellent, accurate and razor-sharp configuration reference for Cisco router hounds. Very good coverage of all L3 routing protocols and subjects such as serial interface and CSU/DSU setup, all of which I've done in previous jobs. Check out the Chapter 19 section on Access Lists. Finally, if you really need a thorough introduction to IPv6 on Cisco, go straight to Chapter 25. Another solid effort from O'Reilly.

Great book for Cisco router admins

This book should be on every Cisco & network admin's shelf! If you manage several Cisco routers, this book is packed with loads of time-saving tips, tricks, scripts, and real world solutions to make router management easy and take the pain out of repetitive daily processes. Some Perl & Unix knowledge is helpful as well as some basic "CCNA level" understanding of Cisco IOS. Troubleshooting and configuration commands are taken to the next level beyond most boring and dry CCNA and Cisco Intro books.

This book covers the major deposit types in an acceptable manner, but does not compare favorably with more thorough and up to date books from Guilbert and Park (Geology of Ore Deposits), or Pirajno (Hydrothermal Mineral Deposits). The original edition is dated 1984 and represents itself as an early attempt to synthesize information concerning plate tectonics and ore deposits. Note that: Plate tectonics is new! The updated 1990 edition does not go much further. The technically challenging book edited by Barnes (Geochemistry of Hydrothermal Ore Deposits) also has some overlap of subject matter, though it is laboratory / experiment oriented. Sawkin's book is less expensive and slightly less technical, but those are the only things in its favor.

A decent product for what it is

This is a setting product which provides description and story hooks about the ancient capital of the Tiefling empire, Bael Turath. It gives extended, supplementary background beyond that given in the Tiefling Race Handbook by Wizards, which complements this product as does product avalable through Wizards in their online D&D Insider product.

It contains some nice maps, but leaves a lot of areas to be detailed by the Dungeon Master who should have the 3 main core books at minimum to make the best use of this product. This is not a ready-to-run module. If that is what you expect ou tof this, you will be very disappointed. Various areas of the city will have differing levels of challenges. Players who insist on tackling the wrong areas can find this setting very lethal. Hints and rumors should point them to areas they can handle at their level and skill. The production values are fairly good and are not grossly lacking. At full price, this product provides somwhat less value than hardcovers, so I only recommend if you can obtain it at a discount. For groups with Tiefling or Dragonborn characters, this setting will be of greater interest.

Surprisingly compelling and useful

I bought this "Adventure Site" to fill up an order to the free shipping line and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and utility of it. For background, I am a habitual DM and my collection of roleplaying paraphernalia is measured in cubic feet. One should note though: this product is meant for someone running a game and is of no use for a player.

Product Quality:
This product consists of a paperback volume bound, a double-sided map, all bound in a cardstock leaf with an enlarged map of the city printed on it. Compared to the quality of previous offerings (Keep on the Shadowfell comes to mind), the printing ink used seems better but nothing else stands out.

Paperback Volume:
The 'book' included in this set is a nifty compilation of fluff text and an assortment of new monsters, and items. The primary use of this book is to give you a feeling for the various parts of the city. A huge help if you are going to let your players roam around a mostly-dead city. Plenty of ideas to build encounters around are provided, with hooks, long-term plots, and locations wrapped up in one neat package.

Map:
The map is of slightly higher quality than I am used to from Wizards and presents you with a grim defiled temple area and a bit of ruined city-scape on the reverse. These are both great locations and I am really pleased with the artwork on them.

Summary:
This product delivers in spades for the DM looking for a little help setting up a ruined city environment.

Finally getting around to reviewing this awesome supplement...

I've referred to Vor Rukoth a few times in my other reviews, so I figure it's about time to actually review it!

In my opinion, this is one of the best DM-oriented D&D "adventures" released in a decade or more. It's a "module" in the classic mold - along the lines of some 70's and 80's era site-based adventures like The Lost City, Keep on the Borderlands, and their ilk. It's also in a very real sense the forerunner of the DM-oriented awesomeness that WotC's been releasing since this book - you can see herein the DNA of both the Gloomwrought and Neverwinter settings... only a lot more concise.

I'll have to start by explaining that, while I've run WotC's adventures under both 3e and 4e, by and large I think they are various shades of ... well, awful, frankly. And though I'm a huge 4e booster, they got even worse under 4e. With some (H1, H2, and P2 for example) you can pretty easily rehab them, but they're mostly just fights. Often, *long* fights, too. Part of this is because of the delve style they stuck to so rigidly, and part is because ... well, I can't think of a good reason for adventures like Marauders of the Dune Sea or Assault on Nightwyrm Spire to be as bad as they are. I think the poor-quality adventures that came out so soon after (and before!) 4e's release did almost irreparable harm to the game's reputation and helped tarnish it as a grindy hackfest devoid of roleplaying - despite the great roleplay-centric advice of the 4e DMG. (Advice which WotC's own adventures rarely, if ever, followed.)

Ahem. So, getting back on track, it probably shouldn't be a surprise that I like the presentation of Vor Rukoth quite a lot.

As I mentioned, this is an adventure *site*, not an adventure. A DM can't easily just pick this up and say, "I'm running Vor Rukoth tonight!" Instead, it's a fertile breeding ground for adventures and exploration. It's a decayed, not-as-dead-as-it-looks city that still teems with intrigue and could form the basis for a few dozen sessions or more. It's here to help DMs make adventures, not to make adventures for them. Not too shabby for $15.

Vor Rukoth is mostly geared towards high-Heroic and low-Paragon-tier adventurers. The city is broken down into 8 main districts - and there's a "home base" of sorts outside of it, which is every bit as intriguing as the ruins themselves. The DM is presented with a list of seven or eight factions, all of which have an interest in the goings-on of the city; some groups will gravitate more towards one than another, which is just great. Each group is given a rough sketch, with its leaders and prominent members given a paragraph or so of description. It's presented directly and straight to the point; the author had a lot of ground to cover in 32 pages.

The locations in the city itself are likewise given birds-eye views. There's some brief background and description, a quick note on which factions are trying to do what there, and some thumbnail sketches of some important locations. There are a few custom monsters, a few new magic items, and a ton of proverbial space around the edges for a capable DM to fill in. It's enough that a capable DM can improv during the game, though it's not quite as improv-friendly as the excellent Gloomwrought box.

I'm thrilled that I'm finally getting to use this in my home campaign instead of staring at it longingly on my shelf. I've been running Dark Sun since August 2010, and with somewhat slowed advancement, my group is level 12 now. I'm tweaking it quite a bit, mind you - I'm using it for my version of Arkhold in the far southeast of the map. I'm keeping some of the Tiefling connection (liking how they were handled in the 4e DSCS) and keeping one or two of the factions, but mostly I'm using it how I think it was intended - as a springboard for my own ideas. (Which are based loosely on Gygax's novel Sea of Death, but that's neither here nor there!)

It will be a fun ride.

Arborist guide

This is a very necessary read for those who need to get their certificate and rely on it for career purposes but it would have been nice to be able to view some of the pages for those who have never read this book before. Also would be nice if the price was dropped considering one can buy this same copy NEW from ISA for $95.00, non- member price or $65.00, ISA member price. Still, this book is the closest one can get to reality when it comes down to taking the final exam.

Stephen Hawking's universe is one of the best books I ever read in my life.It is a great book for beginners, as well as advanced scientists. It explains the universe and other subjects, without the use of complex equations. This book is written in the form of a science timeline, which includes lots of Titans of the science world. These great people include Albert Einstein, Newton, Stephen Hawking and others. No matter how smart the reader is, if he likes science he should read this book. This book is like a database of scientific facts and theories. In the book, journey through time and find out about the earliest Greek mathematicians to Newton's Infinite Universe. Then 500 years later read how his theories were being proven wrong again by Einstein and others. Read about the people who started science and then the others who improved it. Here in this book you will find all the facts of science. I loved this book and I hope you will too. Two Thumbs up.

A Brief Version of "A Brief History"

The title "Stephen Hawking's Universe" may give you the wrong impression about this book, because one would naturally associate Stephen Hawking with more in-depth scientific theories. However, this book is in fact no more than an introduction to the histories and discoveries of our universe. That is, it is more of a "tell-tale" than an explanation type of book, and should not be compared with books like "A Brief History of Time" (by Stephen Hawking himself).
In terms of presentation, this book does a great job in showing us the discoveries made by various scientists of the past and present in a fairly logical order. The beautiful illustrations used also contribute in helping the readers to understand and to maintain interest in the contents. Nevertheless, at times the author does seem to lose focus on the topics, and they become slightly more difficult to follow. Quite often you have to read on a couple of pages (or even chapters) before you are taken back on track.
To summarise, the book provides a clear outline of human's knowledge of the universe in a very graphical manner, and would be suited to those new to such concepts. However, if you are expecting explanation of greater depths, then you will probably be disappointed.

Too simple, bad photos, not Hawking.

I'm not a cosmologist, but Stephen Hawking's Universe was so simply written it is essentially condescending. The language is akin to the level one would read in a newspaper. Moreover, the pictures are second rate pre-contact lense Hubble knock-offs (despite being published in 1997), and the book has very little to do with Stephen Hawking. Sure, he wrote the foreward and did some editing, but it lacks the wit and wonder of a Hawking work. Naming the book after him and putting his picture on the front is misleading. I AM a chemist, and despite this, Filkin's descriptions of Chemical discoveries left even me guessing because he was attempting to dumb-down ideas that aren't dumb-downable, and didn't include diagrams which would be helpful for anyone trying to understand the concepts (like neutrino capturing or particle acceleration). If you want to learn some cosmology, read "A Brief History of Time" or "A Short History of the Universe". These are simply written but informative works that won't leave you waiting for substance.
