I want the sequel!
By Dakini
Charlotte English has done a fantastic job with her second book in the Draykon series. The first book featured two main points of view and an assortment of interesting ancillary characters. In Lokant, many more characters have points of view, and there are lots of new characters added, but since the reader is already familiar with the setting, this is decidedly a bonus. The action here is even more quickly paced and the stakes higher. The plot literally pulls you along.

Llandry is coming to terms with her remarkable transformation at the end of the last book while navigating a strange new sort of relationship with Pensould, a male draykon and my favorite new character, who is wonderfully written: fierce, possessive, loving, strong, a mix of alien and animal thinking. Meanwhile Lady Eva Glostrum is trying to figure out two mysteries: what's going on with the draykon and what's going on with her heart. She's engaged to marry a man who looks like a perfect match on paper, but she's drawn to Tren, the much younger sorcerer she got to know so well in the last book's adventures. And she's increasingly worried about not just the draykon but about the very fabric of her world - and her own strangely alien heritage. As another reviewer noted, there is a distinct introduction of sci fi elements here and it works. The Lokant reminded me vaguely of Time Lords from the Doctor Who universe. I'm eager to learn more about them.

Overall, I found this book to be less confusing than the first, even though lots of new concepts, characters, and complexities are introduced. My familiarity with the setting has increased, but I also think that English's ability to clearly describe what is happening has improved. The writing is outstanding and the characters are well drawn. I can't wait to read more.

Not as good as the first.
By B. Wood
I was a little disappointed with the second book. I feel like, as a reader, I became interested and invested in the first book with Llandry and the Draykon's story, but in Lokant we switch over to Eva and her ancestry. I didn't mind finding out more about Eva, but I felt like it overshadowed Llandry's story. I found myself wanting to rush through her and Tren's POVs to find out more about the Draykons, but I ended up disappointed.

And what happened to Devary Kant?? He played such a big role in the first book and essentially fell off the map in the second. Along with a few other instances, it seemed to me that most of the story line was well thought out and wonderfully written, but there were definitely some holes in the story.

I'm undecided as to whether or not I'll read the last book of the trilogy. If it's like the first book, I'd love to. If it's anything like the second , I don't think I'd enjoy it. Even if I don't, I'm definitely going to look into trying another series by Charlotte English in the future. She is one of the better authors I've come across recently.

The war is coming!
By Ritesh Kala
Lokant is the second book in the Draykon series and it is a fine sequel to the first one. I had reviewed the first book, `Draykon' earlier here. As hoped for and expected, the second book continues with the story of Llandry, with all other characters making an appearance as well. There are a plethora of new characters, who add completely new dimensions to the story.

After reading the first book, I had built up in my head, a direction the story would take. I have to say that the story moved in a completely different but equally nice direction compared to what I had imagined. The book definitely moved into science fiction territory, which I love. SF and fantasy are my two favourite genres and any combination is always welcome (The SF parts are not overwhelming or unbelievable and are credible enough to go down smoothly with the reader). This book really expands the stage on which the story is played out. We find that the three conjoined worlds in the previous book are just a small part of what is really happening. This, at first seemed to me, to be an unusual twist which I could not really digest. But as the story moved forward and things became a little clearer, the roles of everyone in the story became a lot more defined and that is where the fun began.

There are a lot of new characters introduced in the book. There is Kray who is after the Draykon bones and is willing to do a lot of dastardly deeds to get to them. There are all the Lokants each of which seem to be human emotionally, but has powers that no human can match. Others as well, all of whom add new dimensions to the story. The heart of the book, to me, is the development of the character of Llandry. She finds herself in a new form, a new world and with a new mate. Her change from the shy and reserved girl in the first book to a fearsome Draykon in this one is just brilliant. She does retain a lot of her human emotions which had endeared her to me in the first book.

The mystery elements of the previous book continue in this book as well. The mystery of the istore stone of the previous book is just a small part of the larger mystery which plays out in this book. I will, of course, not tell you what the mystery is and let you find it put for yourself. The plot has been magnificently crafted by the author and this book definitely promotes this series into the epic fantasy arena. The author's talent in keeping the reader guessing and wanting to come back for more is simply fantastic. As usual a number of questions are left unanswered at the end of the book (I expect nothing less from a book in the middle of the series). Why do some people want to reignite an old war? What will happen to the enmity between Krays and Limbane? What is Llandry's role in all this? What will happen (or not happen) between Eva and Tren?

As the book progresses and the differentiation between Lokants and Drakoni is established, it becomes absolutely clear that a war will be coming soon. The resurrection of Drakons and their proclamation of war is where this book ends. I am waiting to see what role each character will have to play in the coming war. In the end, all I have to ask you is, "Are you ready for the battle?"

Great book, but be careful when you buy them used.
By Rahul Sancheti
I gifted this book to someone and she loves it. She has earlier done the mistake of buying this used and was regretting that since people that sell used books have solved all the practise tests and marked up the book. This makes the book really useless since all the answers are either written or marked on the book.
Buy new if you want to really utilise the potential of what this book can help you achieve.

Blessings are part of the Christian life and faith. Blessings are also part of the culture of the kingdom of God. People like the idea of blessings but seldom consider the consequences of sin. The Bible lets us know that the wages of sin is death. It also tells us that a man reaps what he sows.

Family curses are the result of sin or someone in the family rebelling against God. Rebellion discharges curses down the family tree. The good news is every curse can be broken through prayer, repentance, and the atoning blood of Christ.

Scripture says, “The curse causeless shall not come.” Yet curses with a cause will. This book shows the root causes that draw family generational curses.

Awash in a Sea of Faith: Christianizing the American People (Studies in Cultural History), by Jon Butler

Challenging the formidable tradition that places early New England Puritanism at the center of the American religious experience, Yale historian Jon Butler offers a new interpretation of three hundred years of religious and cultural development. Butler stresses the instability of religion in Europe where state churches battled dissenters, magic, and astonishingly low church participation. He charts the transfer of these difficulties to America, including the failure of Puritan religious models, and describes the surprising advance of religious commitment there between 1700 and 1865. Through the assertion of authority and coercion, a remarkable sacralization of the prerevolutionary countryside, advancing religious pluralism, the folklorization of magic, and an eclectic, syncretistic emphasis on supernatural interventionism, including miracles, America emerged after 1800 as an extraordinary spiritual hothouse that far eclipsed the Puritan achievement―even as secularism triumphed in Europe.

Awash in a Sea of Faith ranges from popular piety to magic, from anxious revolutionary war chaplains to the cool rationalism of James Madison, from divining rods and seer stones to Anglican and Unitarian elites, and from Virginia Anglican occultists and Presbyterians raised from the dead to Jonathan Edwards, Joseph Smith, and Abraham Lincoln. Butler deftly comes to terms with conventional themes such as Puritanism, witchcraft, religion and revolution, revivalism, millenarianism, and Mormonism. His elucidation of Christianity’s powerful role in shaping slavery and of a subsequent African spiritual “holocaust,” with its ironic result in African Christianization, is an especially fresh and incisive account.

Awash in a Sea of Faith reveals the proliferation of American religious expression―not its decline―and stresses the creative tensions between pulpit and pew across three hundred years of social maturation. Striking in its breadth and deeply rooted in primary sources, this seminal book recasts the landscape of American religious and cultural history.

From Library Journal
Butler's fine scholarly summary of the first three centuries of Christian experience in America is both well researched and very readable. Butler ranges widely, showing how the elitist Christianity of early modern Europe co-existed with belief in magic and the occult and also discussing 18th-century church establishment in America, the negligible impact of the Great Awakening, the impact of the American Revolution on religion, and the democratization of 19th-century American religion. While many of his theses are arguable, they are all impressively defended. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.

Review
Throughout, the richness of detail, nuance, and illustration is superb and often eye-opening...In all, it is a daring work of synthesis...meticulously researched...This book ranks among the most challenging and far-ranging historical analyses of religion in America to date. This is one of those rare books that historians await impatiently for years. It is also one of those rare and remarkable books that prove worth the wait. It fulfills extravagantly the promise of those pathbreaking and pugnacious articles that made magic an essential reality of the seventeenth century and the Great Awakening an interpretive fiction of the eighteenth. It is, by far, the best account we have of early American religious life, and the most radiantly original. (Michael Zuckerman Journal of the Early Republic)

Anyone who wants to know about religion in America up to the Civil War would do well to read Jon Butler's rich, comprehensive and--it must be said--contentious account. (David Martin Times Literary Supplement)

A Non Traditional Approach to American Religious History
By Dennis R. Hidalgo
Awash in a Sea of Faith is a book of its time. The intellectual and historiographical context of Jon Butler's revisionist history of religion in America is found in the camp that Jack Greene, Keith Thomas and David Hall have been preparing for some time now. This trend, which Butler perfects, is marked by a strong skepticism toward the influence of Puritanism in American culture, toward the major claims of American Protestantism, toward the basic dogmas of traditional American religious history and by a desire for historical and geographical egalitarianism. A pervasive skepticism is not the only component at the foundation of Butler's approach. His historical logic is partially guided by a continuous dialectic between the sacred and secular, elite and popular, the barren colonial landscape and the rise of sacred structures, orthodoxy and occultism. Considering the large and long religious historiographies in North America, Butler's approach starts with profoundly untraditional premises and assumptions. It should not surprise us, then, that Butler would arrive to untraditional conclusions. After all that is what revisionism is- to change the way we perceive history and to challenge some rusty assumptions. His main argument, that the Christianization of America came through a process of syncretism, would have not only alarmed Protestant leaders in the 19th century, but would also have worried religious historians in the 20th century. In his presentation of European Protestantism and its journey toward the America continent, Butler emphasizes occultism as a transforming force in religion and society. In doing this, he ignores the strength of the anti-idolatry Protestant movements that "cleaned out" many churches, the close relation between modern empiricism and Protestantism with its emphasis on the "Biblical evidence," and the influence of effective preaching on parishioners.
Considering that the word "holocaust" in the post World Wars is related with the Nazi's massacre of the Jews, Butler demonizes American Protestantism for its missionary zeal and for its emphasis on civil obedience among the African Americans. By doing this, Butler completely disregards the humanitarian impulse in their behalf, which was equally syncretic. And by assuming that African American ideology was secular before 1760 he contradicts his conclusion that "Slavery's destruction of African religious systems in America . . . . constituted cultural robbery. . . . of the most vicious sort." If we still ignore this contradiction, his analysis of the African-American mass movement into Protestant Christianity cannot explain how would the unsophisticated African religious systems could have been a match to Protestantism and to the complex life in American Slavery.
In revising the Great Awakenings Butler take luster out of these movements by emphasizing its conservatism and downplaying its egalitarianism. But here Butler's assumption falters in logic. He presumes that increase social status for the clergy and increment in church authority always meant conservatism. In the American religious context, where pluralism was the main characteristic, more leveled status to clergy, and more authority to non-state-churches (dissidents) meant egalitarianism- particularly compared with the European religious experience. Furthermore, by indicating that itinerant ministers opposed settled ministers selectively, he is not only ignoring their significance, but is also ignoring social forces that would naturally motivate the Itinerants to seek support and sympathy from some settled ministers while ignoring others. Curiously, Butler's analysis of American revivalism is distinguished by a robust defense to the Anglican Church, and a downplaying of dissent's strength and growth-, which is also a revision in traditional American religious history.
Throughout his entire book, but especially on the Antebellum Christianity, Butler always defines the practice of Alchemy, the curiosity for the gothic and the secret, and the believing in dreams and miracles as indication of spiritualism and witchcraft. Defining these religious experiences, which some orthodox leaders, have seen with suspicious eyes, may belie Butler's position of standardization-a secularized Protestant mainstream. At this point the reader would wonder why Butler includes the practice of alchemy with the believing in miracles, since science (to mention only two) was not as clearly define and not as evenly spread as it was a century later, and miracles have always been regarded as part of Christian beliefs. It may be that Butler needs this combination to highlight his point of Protestants' lack of purity and imprecision, which would have been impossible otherwise. Perhaps inexactitude is inbuilt in certain aspects of the study since Christianity is itself syncretic, thus invalidating any model of Christianity detached from "its" culture and historical setting.

A Different Perspective on Religion in Early America
By Craig Stephans
Butler provides a historical view of American religion that attaches less importance to Puritanism as the major force in shaping the nation's religion. He emphasizes the influence of the role of authoritarian and coercive religious practices that established and advanced religious causes in America. Additionally, Butler follows the emergence of a religious eclecticism throughout the colonies. The movement of religious influence was confluential with political and economic developments to shape the colonies. The state-church religion that primarily shaped 17th and 18th century colonial America held power based on its coercion, territoriality and public ceremonialism. He asserts that the religion of the colonists originated primarily in Europe and is incomprehensible apart from understanding its European influences. Paradoxically, Butler writes that the most enduring patterns of American religion were also created and not merely inherited.

Butler's chapters make the points that religious practice was not an organic evolution in the colonies. The governments were actively involved in dictating religious practices of their citizens. Dissenting beliefs and behavior were not welcome to the early colonies with the exception of Rhode Island and Pennsylvania which adopted more lenient libertine laws concerning religion. Religious practice was not standard throughout the colonies nor was it universal among the residents of the colonies. Butler also elaborates on the presence of magic and the occult in the New World of North America. Christians were militant against non-Christian spirituality, occult or magic. These were deemed to occur through diabolical means and were treated as such by the young governments and were later dismissed by children of the Enlightenment.

Butler's treatment of religion and slavery reveals the contradicting tension between the doctrines of Christianity and the practice of slavery. Religion was central to the argument for or against slavery. The practices of religion in the slaveholding colonies had to deal with whether to evangelize and educate the slaves and then whether to allow whites and blacks to worship together. Butler discusses the ways that whites manipulated the Scriptures to accommodate slavery. He illustrates the effect that the slavery argument had on compromising the Christian integrity of churches, as they defended and facilitated slavery

American revivalism was not a single denominational movement that sparked Christianity in the colonies. It was but another stream of religion besides the state church tradition of the establishmentarian Anglican and Congregationalists traditions. The American Revolution brought a shift in the religious landscape as Anglican ministers who supported the crown fled and as a new patriotism competed with religion or merged with it. Following the Revolution, American church leaders renewed efforts to stamp Christian values on a new independent society as a priority for the success of the infant republic.

The religious laws in Virginia illustrate Butler's thesis that religion in the colonies was initially a government sponsored institution. This is not the religious freedom one usually associates with the New World. In the 1670's it was the church-state alliance that provided the stability and authority of the Anglican Church in Virginia. The Virginia Assembly mandated Anglican churches in every county and dictated the processes for vestry elections and taxation on behalf of the church. As a result, Anglican churches, benefiting from compulsory taxes, accounted for every one of the colony's new churches constructed between 1680 and 1720.

What also becomes apparent in Butler's writing is that it was the Deist language of the Declaration of Independence that laid the foundation of religious freedom in the United States rather than the influence of the various Christian movements. It was the secular Revolution and not the religious ties of the colonists that bound the colonies together. Butler argues against historians' claims that evangelicalism was behind the sentiments and boldness behind the revolution. He claims that the Declaration of Independence provides clear-cut evidence of the secondary and supportive role that religion and Christianity played in creating and solidifying the revolutionary struggle.

In the latter chapters of his book, Butler describes the religious movements that largely resemble what we see in the United States today. Following the American Revolution, the acts of the new country allowed for religious freedom and expression. This freedom from coercion and establishment led to new denominations and even new religions like Unitarianism and Mormonism springing up.

Butler points out a new syncretism between popular supernaturalism and Christianity. The interest in spiritualism and desire for supernatural experience led to the popularity of groups like the Swedenborgs, Freemasons, Mesmerists and other spiritualists. Butler highlights four institutional expressions of the religious climate of the new country. These were Methodism, Mormonism, Afro-American Christianity and spiritualism. Butler asserts that region, class and race all constrained the religious tendencies of Americans.

Butler also asserts that denominations gained adherents through coercion and authority. He suggests that denominations "manipulated" systems of denominational meetings to further establish power and influence. Denominations shaped evangelization and the development of new congregations, often through the use of the itinerant preacher. According to Butler, denominations used books and publications to influence and expand authority.

Butler also points to a plethora of reform societies and mostly Christian colleges as contributing to the influence of religion on the society. He assigns a coercive nature to the reform societies that also used print publication to gain audiences and influence. According to Butler, immigrants and indigenous groups contributed greatly to the religious pluralism of the country. This change along with religious renewal, revival and schism brought forth hosts of new groups and new worshippers to the landscape.

For Butler, coercion is the main ingredient of American religious tradition. He seems to think the Christian history is void of God-initiated or lay-initiated growth. This might seem a harsh assessment of his perspective, but I conclude that it is only the censored spiritual movements like occult, voodoo, African rituals and natural theology that Butler thinks are "grass-root" developments. Actual growth of Christianity is due to institutional-hierarchical manipulation and coercion. Even his treatment of the development of Black churches is clouded by Butler's assertion that these were havens of African pagan-ritual as much as Christianity. The expansion of Christianity westward seems to be deemed nothing better than an entrepreneurial movement to claim new markets; the idea of the Christian desire for evangelization for the sake of saving the lost seems foreign to Butler's historical assessment. His concluding treatment of Abraham Lincoln is indicative of his worldview revealed in this book. Lincoln could not possibly have been a sincere Christian; after all, look at what he said here or there.

Butler's book does open a new window to the religious history of American. I think he fails to look into the heart of Christianity in general but sees it from the outside and judges it according to his own worldview and inclinations. His willingness to assess the history from a view other than the normal chronological path is helpful to see the patterns of religious growth and transformations. His book definitely provides me with a more elucidated perspective of our pluralistic landscape today.

Butler Brings Relief From the Puritan Stranglehold
By Matt Tippens
Jon Butler's Awash in a Sea of Faith turns many portions of both George M. Marsden's "Jonathan Edwards: A Life" and Perry Miller's "Errand Into the Wilderness" upside down. Instead of placing Puritanism at the center of American civilization, as both Marsden and Miller do, Butler claims that Puritanism was only one part of a complex American religious landscape. Butler also finds that American Christianity did not begin with the Puritans of New England or Virginia settlers, but rather it began in the eighteenth century and was peaking by the time of the Civil War. Butler challenges the conventional interpretations of America's religious history and gives his readers cause to reconsider what has generally been accepted.

Butler begins by describing the religious heritage that colonists brought with them from Europe. A low level of Christian understanding and practice characterized Europe. This religious apathy was then transferred to colonial America and the development of Christianity was a slow process. The Virginia and Maryland colonies experienced a lack of religious participation and in Puritan New England, Butler points out, by the 1680s the decline in church membership was real not imaginary. This is not to say that religion was nowhere to be found in colonial America, but rather colonists turned to other forms of practice. Butler treats magic and the occult seriously, using witchcraft, magic, and astrology to reveal the extent and importance of non-Christian belief in America, even though it was prohibited by law. Therefore, Butler examines a component of American religion that is frequently ignored by the mainstream, Christian only, historiography.

According to Butler, American society and religion underwent enormous change between 1680 and 1760. The state church tradition, led by Anglicans, reasserted authority to such a degree that Butler contends this period marked the beginning of American Christianity. It was visible through a surge in church construction, and dissenter established elaborate denominational institutions. Here, Butler departs from the accepted prominence of New Puritanism and transfers it to the Church of England resurgence in Virginia and elsewhere. At the same time, Butler explains, enslaved Africans were having their religious practices destroyed. The only religious alternative for slaves, therefore, was to turn to Christianity. Even though their systems were destroyed, slaves kept individual practices alive and a collective Christianity began to emerge among slaves that became more Afro-American after 1800 than it was before. Here, Butler really challenges general assumptions. As white Americans turned back to the Church of England for inspiration, slaves turned back to Africa. Butler also links the rise of slave ownership with the development of Christianity and shows how the two impacted one another. Butler shows how English Anglicans shaped the slaveholding ethic, emphasizing black obedience and white paternalism, which became important for rationalizing slavery in America.

Butler views the American Revolution as a secular event. Soldiers showed little enthusiasm for religion and indifference was common in the camps. After independence, church and denominational leaders renewed efforts to make the United States a Christian nation. This involved an attack on Deism that was "suspiciously commonplace among the new nation's political and social leaders" (p. 218). As a result, by 1800 American Christianity was expanding as it never had before. Butler explains the rise of religious pluralism by looking at Methodists, Mormons, Afro-American Christianity, and spiritualism. Religion became more voluntary. By the time of the Civil War, America was becoming a "spiritual hothouse" according to Butler, with a variety of religious traditions taking hold.

By departing from the Puritan domination in America's religious history, Butler brings relief from the Puritan stranglehold. There are advantages to this. Butler steps away from Jonathan Edwards and Ralph Waldo Emerson and gives voice to others that have been overlooked in Puritan-centered studies; such as slave narratives. Butler compares the number of churches and churchgoers and finds that the Puritans were in the minority. Butler also shows that religion continued to grow in American even after the Puritans had departed from the scene. On the other hand, there are disadvantages to this approach. Even though Puritans were in the minority, they left a formal written theology that served to influence generations that followed. The new nation borrowed ideas from the Puritans. Butler, by comparing the rise of slave ownership with that of Christianity, makes a dangerous analogy. Did Christianity cause racism or were American Christians racists? It seems that racism had other origins besides religion. Nevertheless, Butler has given us reason to look outside of Puritan culture to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to help explain America's religious history.

Honored by the Association of American Publishers as the Best Medical Book of 2004, Inborn Errors is the definitive work on genetically caused abnormalities of human development. Despite the explosion in genetic advances, the causes of two-thirds of all birth defects remain unknown. However, we are on the brink of a revolution in this area, and Inborn Errors is at the forefront. It is the first book to connect the disease-causing gene to its biochemical pathway and to the structural/functional disorder. Mutations of the gene, the clinical picture, genetic counseling and prognosis, and any known treatments are discussed. For medical geneticists, genetic counselors, pediatricians, and developmental biologists, the book is a unique and groundbreaking reference.

A very informative book that is packed with information, however I have 2 major issue with it. First, many sections seem poorly written and poorly organized with many sentences seemingly just slapped together at random and some that don't seem to have any real context with the rest of the paragraph. Second, in many instances the section and subsection levels are poorly defined. Going by the different font styles and section title/subtitle positioning, there are many places where there seems to be a change in level where none is warranted and many places where no change is present when one should be present.

Mathematical Foundations of Information Retrieval (Mathematical Modelling: Theory and Applications), by S. Dominich

This book offers a comprehensive and consistent mathematical approach to information retrieval (IR) without which no implementation is possible, and sheds an entirely new light upon the structure of IR models. It contains the descriptions of all IR models in a unified formal style and language, along with examples for each, thus offering a comprehensive overview of them. The book also creates mathematical foundations and a consistent mathematical theory (including all mathematical results achieved so far) of IR as a stand-alone mathematical discipline, which thus can be read and taught independently. Also, the book contains all necessary mathematical knowledge on which IR relies, to help the reader avoid searching different sources.
Audience: The book will be of interest to computer or information scientists, librarians, mathematicians, undergraduate students and researchers whose work involves information retrieval.

Compiled by acclaimed Goth journalist and poet Liisa Ladouceur, it gives readers insight into the unique vernacular of this fascinating community, describing in detail and with black humour the fashion, music, and lifestyle as well as sharing insider slang such as Baby Bat, Corp Goth and the Gothic Two-Step, and the first ever Goth Band Family Tree. Review
"A wickedly funny portrait of this community in black…If you're the sort who gives out gifts on Hallow's Eve, Encyclopedia Gothica is ideal for babybats and elder goths who'll appreciate the wealth of reminders of the experiences that make up goth life." —NOW Magazine (October 2011)

"We knew that we were going to like this book from the very first page. . . . Ladouceur is a rare gem of a commenter that has the ability not only to laugh at herself, but to be able to get you to laugh at yourself too." —www.HoustonPress.com (October 2011)

"Ladouceur has compiled a thorough and amusing encyclopedia about all-things-Goth . . . Whether you want to read about Nosferatu, Goth Juice or mall Goths you'll find brief and truly informative segments in Encyclopedia Gothica." —www.AntiMusic.com

"Encyclopedia Gothica, contrary to what you might think of goth culture, doesn't take itself too seriously. Just the opposite: Ladouceur's humour is a welcome rarity in an oft-misunderstood subculture." —Maclean's (November 2011)

"For those who continue to fear Goths, this book is a powerful antidote. Despite their spiky, menacing exterior, Encyclopedia Gothica details a culture as harmless and geeky as your average Star Wars fanboy or Kiss Army foot soldier." —National Post (November 2011)

"Anyone who identifies as a Goth but wishes that people would stop asking what that means now has a book that they can point people to. Including illustrations from the talented Gary Pullin, Encyclopedia Gothica is the essential Goth reference whether you're wondering who Sisters of Mercy are or what absinthe is (and why Marilyn Manson has his own brand of the green stuff)." —www.GeeksOfDoom.com

What Is “What Is Goth”?

Ask a Goth person “What is Goth?” and they’ll likely tell you, “I’m not Goth.” Which is a sure sign that they are, in fact, %666 Goth. If you find this confusing, this book is for you. If this makes perfect sense, this book is for you — but it is also about you.

It’s no wonder that the G–word perplexes both insiders and on–lookers alike. This one hard–working four–letter word has been asked to define so many things: music, fashion, architecture, typefaces, literature, cinema, a Germanic tribal horde and, for about 30 years now, the kind of people prone to hanging out in graveyards sipping red wine and pretending it’s blood while reading Shelley aloud and contemplating the bleakness of existence (and/or holing up in their bedrooms with Joy Division records). At least that’s who one might think a Goth person is by the way we are most often portrayed in news reports and the kind of articles that pop up around Halloween or whenever a teenager wearing a black T–shirt shoots someone.

I say “we” here because I am, unabashedly, Goth.

I wasn’t born that way, a daughter of darkness. But it didn’t take much. In fact it took exactly 4 minutes and 20 seconds of television. MuchMusic, then the Nation’s Music Station in Canada, had just come to my area and, being obsessed with popular music, I watched every day after school. And on one afternoon in the late 1980s Much played “She Sells Sanctuary” by a British band I didn’t know, The Cult. Like most videos of the era, it was a simple performance clip, the band lip–synching and fake–playing in a studio — in this case one bathed in psychedelic coloured lights. It’s not, viewed today, particularly Goth. (Singer Ian Astbury is dressed like a hippie and guitarist Billy Duffy has short white blond hair, to start.) But its opening moments — a red curtain parts to reveal a shadowy, Shaman–type figure all in black slowly swirling his hands around in a fog — hypnotized me like nothing I’d seen before. And the song itself — with its incessant drumbeat, intoxicating echoey guitar riffs and infectiously simple, haunting refrain about the world dragging us down was my first exposure to something that bombastically melodramatic. I knew melancholy from poetry, but this was ache you could dance to. For me, being exposed to “She Sells Sanctuary” was like getting a blood transfusion: I woke up afterwards and my insides were completely different. I had a totally new pulse.

After The Cult came The Cure. And Love and Rockets and Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy and Siouxsie and everything else I could get my hands on in a small town, pre–internet. A random photo of three scary looking guys in a free magazine turned me on to Skinny Puppy, and from them came the discovery of industrial music. By this point, I had moved to Toronto, knew the word “Goth,” and was well on my way to exploring everything that meant. Ultimately, I started publishing my own fanzine (The Ninth Wave, named after an album side by Kate Bush) and guest co–hosting a campus radio show, Beyond the Gates of Hell, with the Gothiest boy in town. It was about this time that I started being asked, “What is Goth?” A lot. Especially by the media.

On many occasions I primped for evening news cameras or wayward reporters and tried my best to explain what the hell all this was. I would declare how we are not (all) suicidal or satanic, speak haughtily of a love for poetry and philosophy and beauty and romance, trying my best to convey, in a way that just might make it into the inevitably truncated soundbite, just what is Goth.

I was, of course, doomed.

Since it first crawled out of the clubs of England and America in the death throes of the 1970s, the subculture we’ve come to call Goth has been difficult to explain. At the start, these denizens of the night were known as batcavers or death rockers, the music was generally considered part of post–punk and the clothes were simply … black. Mystery lingers over who first appropriated the word “Goth” to describe this new kind of young freak; my beloved Ian Astbury (one of those Goth icons who insists he’s not Goth at all) is just one who has staked his claim to it.

By the mid–1980s, the G–word was well established, and a collective consciousness evolved around the term. Gothic rock was a legit musical genre. There were Goth–specific shops, Goth magazines and Goth festivals. Goth was now a somewhat recognizable thing, a world of Victorian– or Medieval–inspired sense and sensibilities co–mingling with punk rock and S&M attitude and fashion. And the diverse crew of anarchists, art school brats and horror movie fans who had started it seemed to have been distilled into a fairly homogenous bunch — one quite easy to identify. Or so we thought. Thanks to explosion of the internet in the mid–1990s these people — many of them misfits in small towns around the globe — started to find each other in great numbers. And as they chatted amongst themselves, they discovered that as much as they were all drawn to what had come to be known as Goth, they weren’t necessarily alike. A popular question became, “Is [this thing I like/hate] Goth?” Because, like any good species seeking immortality, the subculture was mutating, drawing upon new influences such as cyberpunk, rave culture and anime and finding new ways of expressing a devotion to the dark side beyond black eyeliner and backcombed hair. The different factions named themselves: rivetheads, Cybergoths, Romantigoths, etc. Each new wave brought their own codes of conduct and methods of communication. For the one thing these sub–groups had in common was that each sought to distinguish itself from the others, and from youth culture trends at large. And so, Goths reevaluated what the G–word meant, twisting it into new variations to suit the bewildering number of subgenres and sub–subgenres, so much so that terms such as Trad Goth emerged to distinguish the oldschool original folk from the new.

Dance The Ghost With Me. . . .
By M. Gheesling
To distill an entire subculture into one book isn't any easy task. In the case of "Encyclopedia Gothica," it's even harder as Goths are constantly asking the question "What is Goth ?" and reinventing the definition. Surely, there will be at least one Goth who reads this book and exclaims "They included Band X ?! They're not Goth !" or "Why wasn't Band Y included ? They're G.A.F.!" (Exclamation #2 was my refrain when I discovered that the band This Ascension was missing an entry. By the way, if you don't know what G.A.F. is, you need this book.)

Nevertheless, the author does an admirable job of including the right stuff and leaving out the superfluous. Enduring Goth stuff and stuff that Goths have loved forever (Sisters of Mercy; Kambriel, the fashion designer; Hammer Horror films; Snakebite cocktails, etc.) are included while flash-in-the-pan micro-trends and the promising-but-too-new are not. (Sorry, Coilhouse magazine.)

What elevates Encyclopedia Gothica above other reference works are the wry opinions of the author. With typical Goth snarkiness, what could have been a dry reference work becomes much more entertaining, even if you don't agree with the author's viewpoints. (Personally, I didn't think Winona Ryder was all that bad in "Bram Stoker's Dracula," although she was upstaged by Sadie Frost. )

In any case, Encyclopedia Gothica, in short order, has earned a place on my bookshelf right next to my copies of Baudelaire's "Flowers of Evil" and Voltaire's "What Is Goth ?" and "Paint It Black: The Guide To Gothic Homemaking." All dark hearts should get a copy. . . .

Haunting
By Kyle Bernstein
This is a beautifully presented, lovingly-written account of the who's who, what's what, origins, and history of the Gothic arts. Less "Goth for Dummies" than a well-organized and comprehensive guide to the wonderfully dark underworld by one who has obviously lived it. The lovely cover art makes this a great (Halloween) gift for your favourite night person. It would fell right at home on the shelf amongst the Poppy Z. Brite and Ann Rice or displayed on the mantle or coffee table.

Basic and Useful
By P. G. Wickberg
I lay no claim to be a Goth, even an Elder Goth, but I do admit to being Goth-curious (don't know what those mean? That's why you need this book!) For those looking for a way to learn more about them without having to put on fishnet, striped tights or eyeliner, Liisa (that's how the book spells it, no matter what Amazon says...) Ladouceur gives almost 300 pages of definitions of all things Goth (not Gothic - an important difference, although she does mention the Visigoths and their Ostrogoth cousins in passing). The scope is world-wide, although outside the U.S. she devotes little space to anything besides the UK, Germany and Japan - isn't there a Goth scene in Russia by now? She also does so with a outrageous humor that is totally at odds with the usual media image as Goths as cheerless souls who hang around in dark corners obsessing about the sadness of life. There is even a subset called Perky Goths, Liisa informs us, who wear pink and are relentlessly cheerful (the black-clad corner lurkers, she says, are a subset known as Mopey Goths). There are also Trad Goths (who don't believe anything Gothic post-dates 1990), Cyber Goths (who are obsessed with technology, natch) and Faerie Goths (usually found chilling out at Renaissance Fairs), and so on. The book also gives a pretty good fast summary of the "progressive music" scene from the beginnings of punk to more-or-less the present, although obviously she concentrates on the groups of most interest to Goths. The book's one drawback is that it was complete up to 2011, when it was published - nothing changes faster that popular culture, and by 2014 it is in need of an update!

Independent Film Producing : The Outsider's Guide to Producing A First Low Budget Feature Film, by Paul Battista

You don't need a big studio to get on the big screen. For low-budget filmmakers, nothing is quite so terrifying as the elements of legal concerns that must be considered before the film can actually be made-at least if you want to have the ability to distribute it in any way. While Paul Battista's well-composed and necessary book won't alleviate all your fears, it does a good job of waking you up and helping you to think of things in a realistic manner, rather than in an idealistic manner that will sabotage your filmmaking efforts.
While this book is specifically designed for producers, it fully realizes that, all too often, low-budget directors will find themselves as their own producers. If that's you, then you need to pick up this book. If you already have a good producer, you should definitely get them a copy!
While Paul Battista is an entertainment lawyer, he's a little bit of a different beast because he's also a filmmaker that has written, produced and directed 2002's Crooks, which was released by Warner Home Video. As such, the filmmaker inside him allows him to speak more naturally to other filmmakers and does a good job of keeping the lawyer tendencies toward "legalese" in check-most of the time.
Battista does a really great job with making really complicated concepts understandable. From why a casting director is important to what you need to realize about different types of distribution, the author really helps keep you in the midst of this book.
There's no question this is a reusable book, as you're not going to be able to retain all of the information in this book on a single read through. With that said, it's a book that you would be well advised to read while you're in pre-production on your film, because there are a number of things you should really be considering from the outset.
