`Elegant, rigorous, fresh, P. K. Page's work sings with a voice of independent character and maenad conjecture. It is a creature that lives on its own terms and terrain. It is startling, authoritative, and anti-sentimental, able to bear cool as well as passionate gazing at our own species. Her poems are always thinking -- each line is thinking, while its six senses remain impeccably alert. Her poems live by wit, wisdom, sass, suspense and a muscular lissome synapse and diction. They are daring in scope, meticulous in accomplishment, and boldly moral -- with a lovely flavour of amoral verve! We fall under the charm of her reasoning, of her fecund, fastidious imagination, of her many musics, and of her necessariness to us, her essentialness.'

`There is an irony to moving: while the primary change seems to be an external one, it is often the subtle, internal one that is the most profound. The more exotic the locale, the more exotic the inner change. Canadian poet P.K. Page tracks the course of this transformation in her book Brazilian Journal. In 1957, Page moved to Brazil with her husband, where he was assigned as Canadian ambassador. Loath to move there at first, she is slowly drawn in by Brazil and soon comes to love it. Gradually, a change takes place. While a writer by trade, Page begins to gravitate towards the visual, becoming entranced by Brazil's natural beauty, eventually turning from poetry to drawing and painting in an effort to capture her surroundings.

`Despite being seduced by the outer world, Page's journal entries remain rich in observation. Each page luxuriates in description of the nature – an insect with ``black lace wings and a green brocade head and a noise like a DC-3 revving up'' finds its way into Page's bedroom, the world ``throbs'' with green, and a ``wild palm leggy as colts'' appears before her on a bay. Most of Page's entries are filled with this kind of reverent, indulgent description, roping the reader in and making Brazil's beauty visceral. In fact, Page's writing is often observational at the expense of the personal – the reader rarely, if ever, is allowed into her inner life, though this doesn't mean it isn't there. Indeed, Page, who passed away in 2010, apparently excised many of her more reflective passages while preparing to publish her journals, choosing to edit out some of her darker thoughts about Brazil and about her inability to write poetry.

`There are certain passages that make the reader chafe, including ones in which Page complains about lazy servants, and uses outdated, racially charged language. She also makes observations about Brazil's prejudiced, divided society, which, while uncomfortable, serve to capture Brazil's complexity. Nonetheless, despite being very much a product of her time, Page adjusts to the strange new environment with poise, and it is clear that something about Brazil makes Page feel more alive. ``Something mad is happening to me,'' she writes. ``I seem to be falling in love with the world. And something in me is afraid. It is hard to know joy from pain – just as it is hard to know hot water from cold, if either is hot or cold enough.'' Anyone who has gone somewhere new and has been touched profoundly by the place will be able to relate to Page.

`Brazilian Journal should appeal to a wide array of readers. Poets, naturalists, language enthusiasts, and fans of Page's work alike will enjoy, and perhaps be awakened by it.'

About the Author

P. K. Page wrote some of the best poems published in Canada over the last five decades. In addition to winning the Governor General's Award for poetry in 1957, she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1999. How could I have imagined so surrealist and seductive a world? One does not like the heat, yet its constancy, its all-surroundingness, is as fascinating as the smell of musk. Every moment is slow, as if under warm greenish water.

The flavour is beyond my ability to catch. The senses are sharpened by that smell -- a vegetable polecat called jack-fruit which when ripe is picked from trees in our jungle; by these sights: Niemeyer's bridges, for instance, built over the canyons of this remarkably mountained city -- long, sinuous, low bridges on pylons, white as platinum against the green of the mato -- with bright glimpses of the sea both above and below; recurring couples -- on the street everyone is paired -- in love, embracing or half-embracing, whatever the heat; and the solitary figure in the window, usually female, framed by a mat of hot air and gazing off into a kind of languor, as if all time were designed for that purpose.

It is hard to get anything done. It is hard to focus. A thought is barely born before it melts, and in its place so lovely a void one could hardly have guessed emptiness so attractive. We swim now, in the great hot pool -- not cooling off, merely drowning our wetness in a greater wetness -- while next door the Sisters sing their Aves in the totally dark convent. The other night we heard the giggles of a host of small girls, and leaning on the balustrade in what must surely be the classical Brazilian pose, found -- instead of a children's party as we had thought -- the Sisters themselves, those whom we have seen at dusk, silently reading their breviaries under the cassia trees, now swinging on the swings, black robes flying. A wonderful subject for Pegi Nicol, had she been alive to momentarily lay aside her bright jujube colours and try the inky ranges of blues and greens.

I think of her now, perhaps, because her joyful, bright oils, bursting with life, somehow parallel all this tropical exuberance. And once reminded of her, I see again her posthumous show at the National Gallery of works painted when she was dying -- beautiful, brilliant, large canvases, filled to overflowing. It was as if the lethal, proliferating cancer shells within her had been transformed into a multitude of life-giving images which made dance the grey air of the gallery.

And because our reception rooms are like the shell-white grottoes where mermaids might sober up after a drunken night, a large Nicol of girls gardening and bending in a profusion of colour would shed a warmer light in all this green and white. A Nicol, a Lillian Freiman, and a great Bonnard....

Steven D. Eppinger is Professor of Management Science and Innovation at MIT Sloan School. Finally A Central Reference for the DSM Work!

This is a beautifully compiled book collecting research on the Design Structure Matrix method over the past 20 years. The book has very clear organization. Within each topic, a variety of examples are collected, and concisely presented. Full references are provided for those interested in going deeper. The high quality color prints makes a strong visual impact and is just a pleasure to see, speaking as someone who is a part of this research community! Finally, there is a place I can point to for those who ask to read more about the method. Thank you!

Lots of examples to save you thinking

The book describes a variety of application examples of the use of DSM in different process and product domains and in dealing with different problems in various industries. The book uses colour to make the connections clear. Typical examples include:

• Using DSM to represent and analyse the architecture of complex systems.
• Applying DSM to represent and analyse organizations that develop engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.
• Applying DSM to represent and analyse product development processes for engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.
• Using DSM in matrix models that represent two or more domains at once.

The large number different colourful charts in the book illustrate the different types of information that can be shown in the connection between the system elements.

Is this book useful? Well, it depends. It does deserve a place in an organizations’ library to provide junior systems engineers with ideas about how DSM and N2 charts can be used in various situations. However, it does not appear to be a book that would be referenced very often and so does not need to be on your bookshelf.

Another Cronin gem rescued from oblivion

Like "Vigil in the Night," "The Valorous Years" was published in serial form in Good Housekeeping magazine in 1940. And as with "Vigil," I was amazed at how riveted this jaded reader was by an old-fashioned squeaky-clean tale of a young hot-tempered Scottish doctor with a heart of gold, replete with heartwarming virtuous village folk, scheming cold-hearted go-getters in the big city, a patient country girl who bides her time waiting for the man she loves, and various other standard building-blocks, not to mention more "miracles" (positive outcomes against all odds) than you would think could fit in one novel. Cronin's wonderful writing makes it all come alive. A really fun and absorbing read.

Romance, Ambition and Medical Training

I understand the author was a physician so his depiction of the practice of medicine in the 30s in Scotland is probably accurate. The book is well written and is for you if you love "period pieces." If you are in the medical profession it will have you shaking your head in wonder that people survived the treatments.

The Valorous Years ; good reading but not A.J.Cronin's best work

A typical Cronin story of a young doctor struggling against the odds, set against the backdrop of 1930's England and with some enticing relationship issues. Must have originally come out in serial form as I had not seen the book before, and thought I had all of Cronin's books. Enjoyed the read, but it does not rank with eg The Citadel, The Stars Look Down and The Keys of the Kingdom in quality and compulsive page-turning.

5 hot kinky and even more are deserved stars!

Cade has made the #1 spot in my fav men of Sierra Cartwright!!! Whatever he pleases, I'm his completely!

I want to hate Sofia for getting the chance with Cade, but I can't hate her. She's a strong, independent and successful business woman who takes no s***. She knows her strength and has built her company from her mother's vision. She didn't had it easy, but never gives up. She's curious and willing to try with Cade.

Cade is a bastard child. A chip on his shoulder that keeps him hidden on the ranch he inheritated, along with some other demons that he thinks no one would understand. And old habits die hard when no one tries to break them.
It's Sofia who evokes feelings in him and yet he pushes her away when she tries to break his walls.
But it's also her that brings out his most dominant nature. Her curiousity awakes some fantasies and she's willing to fulfill them.

His kinks are so freaking hot that I was on fire more than once.

Their chemistry is strong right from the beginning and just gets stronger and stronger with every touch, with every bit of trust that is given freely.
Both characters are strong and you have an instant connection with them both. Their banter is so funny I had a couple of laugh out loud moments.
The story is hot and funny and sometimes heartbreaking.
Sierra Cartwright strikes again with her amazing writing!

PS: There are a couple minor characters that I would love to see getting their own story. *coughs* Thompson and Erin *coughs*

LOVE CADE AND SUMMER

WOW! Brand may be my favorite of all of Sierra Cartwright's books.

I loved Cade and Sofia's story. They meet at Lara and Connor Donovan's wedding celebration. Sofia is an event planner and Cade Donovan is a cowboy who has a 100 year celebration to host, but didn't realize what he was getting himself into with this party.

The chemistry between these two is amazing and Cade Donovan is a Dom who know just how to push her. I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover. It is super hot and I can't wait to meet more of the Donovan Dynasty Series!

I am completely IN LOVE with CADE DONOVAN! That sexy cowboy can tie me up whenever he pleases! Sierra Cartwright gives us another sensual, passionate, and erotic romance in her fantastic DONOVAN DYNASTY series. I can never get enough of this author. Her writing is so addicting. Her characters are sexy and strong, and her storylines touch the heart. What more can you possibly ask for in this genre?

Cade and Sofia. Two very different characters that compliment each other so well. There is instant chemistry and smoldering heat between the two. One sassy event planner. One tortured gorgeous cowboy. Boom! You got yourself a unputdownable erotic romance!

The initial interaction between Cade and Sofia was HOT! They meet at another Donovan wedding. There is dancing and there is a dark corner where anything could happen. They part ways after just a taste and immediately they want more. Cade is in desperate need of Sofia’s services, event planning that is, and he will do just about anything to make that happen. They both have their demands for each other and the witty banter that ensues is so enjoyable to read.

Beautiful Sofia brings out the sexy dominant nature in Cade. He wants her to surrender, but she is inexperienced and unsure. One stormy night, the connection strengthens and Sofia gives in to her desires. Now, Cade wants so much more than a simple distraction. She brings light to his darkness. She chases away his demons. Sofia thinks being with Cade is too much of a risk, personally and professionally. But with touch after touch of his hands and his dominance, he consumes her and chases away her doubt. Now, whatever happens, it was definitely worth the risk.

I was completely invested in Sofia and Cade’s happily ever after. I cheered them on the whole way through. I was left satisfied and bursting with giddiness by the last page. This series has become a favorite of mine, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

At the same time, much of the functional role of the various sub-areas in human auditory cortex is still relatively unknown, and a more sophisticated understanding is only now emerging through the use of contemporary electrophysiological and neuroimaging techniques. The integration of results across the various techniques signify a new era in our knowledge of how human auditory cortex forms basis for auditory experience. This volume on human auditory cortex will have two major parts. In Part A, the principal methodologies currently used to investigate human auditory cortex will be discussed. Each chapter will first outline how the methodology is used in auditory neuroscience, highlighting the challenges of obtaining data from human auditory cortex; second, each methods chapter will provide two or (at most) three brief examples of how it has been used to generate a major result about auditory processing. In Part B, the central questions for auditory processing in human auditory cortex are covered. Each chapter can draw on all the methods introduced in Part A but will focus on a major computational challenge the system has to solve. This volume will constitute an important contemporary reference work on human auditory cortex. Arguably, this will be the first and most focused book on this critical neurological structure. These films, sponsored by the National Propaganda Institute (Secretariado Nacional de Propaganda), convey a conservative image of both mainland Portugal and the country's overseas African colonies (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and St. Thomas and Principe). The films about the mainland emphasize traditional values, the importance of obedience to authorities and a strict division of gender roles, whereby women are relegated to the domestic sphere. The Portuguese countryside, where age-old customs and a strong social hierarchy prevailed, is presented in these movies as a model for the rest of the country. The films about the colonies, in turn, underline the benefits of the Portuguese presence in Africa and portray the colonized as docile subjects to Portuguese rule.

“This book is a major achievement, but it is difficult. Most readers will be intimidated: they will not know the films; the films are not very good ('too heavily invested in disseminating the values of the regime'); and few readers have the history of Portugal at their fingertips. Vieira (Georgetown) puts Salazar in the Mussolini/Hitler category. Hideous aspects of cruel tyranny mark every regime-approved film. Salazar, the ruler of Portugal's so-called New State, wanted to combat lies, error, slander, and ignorance. See the film A Revolução de Maio, or The May Revolution (1937). He believed that good rural life, agriculture, is humanity's call (A Canção de Terra, or The Song from the Earth, 1938). Virtuous women (i.e., women obedient to men) are the foundation of society. The Portuguese are spiritual (Fátima Terra de Fé, Fatima, Land of Faith, 1943). What about colonies?They are necessary, democratic, and Christian (Feitiço do Império, Spell of Empire, 1940). Colonizing is spiritual, protective, civilizing (Chaimite, 1953). The best supplement to this intensity study is not a history of Portuguese movies, but a consideration of propaganda, like Toby Clark's Art and Propaganda in the Twentieth Century: The Political Image in the Age of Mass Culture (1997). Insight into the Salazar period

This specialist book gives a vivid picture of the Salazar regime as reflected in the cinematographic production of the time. It is a well-structured analytical survey of this historical period, which is explored from a number of key angles: the overall New State's ideology, and the role played in it by city and countryside; the colonies; religion; gender; fado singing and folklore; favoured literary figures; and other areas of scrutiny. With its comprehensive and in-depth approach, this book is of good value to those seeking a well-informed appraisal of a distinctive period in Portugal's twentieth century history.
