About the Author

Merle C. Potter is Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Michigan State University and was the first recipient of the Teacher-Scholar award. He has authored or coauthored twenty-four textbooks and exam review books.

Jack Goldberg is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. He has published several textbooks and numerous research papers.

Edward F. Aboufadel is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Grand Valley State University. He is coauthor of an undergraduate textbook on wavelets.

A well-written and gentle introduction to advanced mathematics for engineers, but with only a minimum set of solutions.

This book will appeal primarily to engineers, scientists, and analysts who use mathematics as an application tool for practical problems. Although it will have less appeal for mathematicians, sections of this book may provide them with helpful preludes to more rigorous presentations.

The text provides a reasonably comprehensive introduction to key mathematical topics of interest to engineers and scientists including, ODEs, Series Methods, Laplace Transforms, Matrices, Vector Algebra, Fourier Series, PDEs, Numerical Methods, Complex Variables, and Wavelets.

The book's primary strength is its gentle presentation of potentially difficult topics using a well-organized step-by-step approach with lots of solved in-text examples, and it ties it's presentations to current software technology. Although computer technology plays an increasingly important role in the solution of real problems by subject matter experts, many mathematical presentations often ignore or minimize this importance. Here applications are integrated with both analytical and technology solutions using, primarily, Maple but also addressing Matlab and even Excel. The appropriate Maple commands are discussed and explained in the text and an Appendix has a short overview of Maple. This is much more appropriate than leaving technology solutions to be studied separately. The book also includes material of contemporary importance, e.g., wavelets not normally found in similar works.

The book's primary weakness is its lack of fully worked solutions to problem sets. Only solutions to even number problems are provided, and even here not all even number problems are provided with answers. Solutions only provide the final answers not the steps necessary to obtain the answers. Thus, even if a matching answer is obtained it is not clear if the best approach to obtain the answer was used. End of sections problems often include specific problems to be solved with Maple; however, the Maple commands to obtain these results are not provided in the solution key. To put the solution issue in context: although the book is over 700 pages long the "Answers to Selected Problems" section is only 15 pages.

This is an excellent guide to advanced applications for engineers and scientists that can serve as both a text and reference, providing discussions of both analytical and technology solutions. Its major fault is its lack of fully-worked solutions to problem sets, and only providing answers to some, albeit many, even number questions. If the solution insufficiencies were corrected this work would easily merit five stars. However, even with its solutions deficiencies, this well-written work with its numerous solved in-text examples, is easy to recommend. If used in conjunction with a source of problems with fully-worked solutions this would be an outstanding introduction to advanced engineering mathematics.

Refreshing in its broad appeal

For many math departments around the country, a good part of course offerings consists of service courses for engineering. As a result, there are lots of textbooks around written to fit a particular niece. And the result is often a fairly narrow focus.
This lovely book is refreshing in its broad appeal: advanced engineering mathematics, engineering analysis, or applied mathematics. Designed for engineering students, it is well balanced and useful for its primary mission as well as for students in a related variety of mid-to upper level undergraduate courses; even for math majors.
Although its stated target audience is upper-level undergraduate students or first-year graduates, it may work well as a supplementary text in differential equations, in transform theory, and in applied mathematics, more generally.
Selections from the contents: Reals and complex, differential equations (both ordinary (ODEs) and partial (PDEs)), transforms (including Fourier and wavelets), matrix theory and linear algebra, numerical methods.
Special features in the new edition: Focuses on real-world problems; Incorporates MapleRG throughout, with some applications of ExcelRG and MATLABRG. includes Review solutions of ordinary differential equations + a new chapter on wavelets and a new section on Fourier Transforms. Reads like honest advice from a big sister

"The Her Campus Guide to College Life" is the PERECT book for any high school female preparing for college. Those months before actually stepping foot on campus can be filled with anxiety and questions that don't seem to be handled in your welcome packet. How do you get along with a roommate in such a small space? What things do you ACTUALLY need to pack? Can you work while also taking classes and if so, what's the best way to do that? How do I make sure to stay safe on campus? This answers all those questions and more. Unlike other guides that maybe gloss over the lifestyle aspects and focus just on academics, this focuses on more than just good study habits. It's realistic about the types of experiences and encounters students might have outside of the classroom (like extracurricular activities, applying for internships, how to navigate the party scene, Greek life, and more) in an honest, non-judgemental way. It's like getting advice from a big sister that's already been through it and wants to share her wisdom and tips. Definitely recommend this as a grad gift for anyone headed off to campus in the fall!

Must-have for all incoming college freshmen

I bought this for my sister who is started college this year, and I really wish I had had it when I was starting college! The book is fun but also keeps it real--I was really impressed by their treatment of very important (but sensitive) topics like dealing with sexual assault and mental health problems that are all-too-common on college campuses. The book literally answers every questions I would have wanted to know--everything from being in a sorority, dealing with professors and TAs, how to ace a test, etc. Highly recommend for incoming freshmen, but also older students--the book is full of resources and helpful tips to have on hand in ANY situation.

I read this book last night (free on Kindle Unlimited) and ordered it today for 4 high school grads that I coach. As a professor and social psychologist, I found the advice on a wide range of topics (e.g., how to stay safe on campus, how to talk to professors, how to study and manage time, how to navigate social media, how to apply for jobs and internships) to be accurate and on-target, and written in a style that will appeal to 18 year olds (i.e., informal and engaging, but not too “cutesy”). As someone who teaches human sexuality, I also appreciated the advice on navigating friendships, romantic relationships, and hookups (which is super important, but not something that most parents feel comfortable talking about); the information in these chapters was accurate, relevant, realistic, and not too preachy. My only qualm about the book is that it consistently presumed heterosexuality (e.g., referring to crushes as “boy toys” or “studs”, when it would have been just as easy to use more inclusive terminology or to acknowledge that some readers will have a same-sex crush), especially given research showing that women tend to be “sexually fluid” (or changing), especially in the college years (numbers are often underreported because of stigma, but it’s not unlikely that up to 10% of the readers of the book will have crushes on women). If you can get over that, the book is an easy read and a great resource for someone about to go off to college. One tip I would add: Take your own printer to college! In my experience, students who rely on campus printer labs are much more likely to turn in work late (or not at all) because they try to print at the last minute and run into problems (e.g., the server goes down, the printer lab is closed, there is a long line of students waiting); I’ve also seen that students with their own printers are much more likely to proofread printed versions of their work before turning it in, which results in a higher quality product (and consequently a higher grade).

How They kept the Faith: A Take of the Huguenots of Languedo

I had been reading a lot of books for school, and when I finally got to reading this book, I couldn't set it down! It's the best I've read in a loooooong time!
The story is about two main characters: Eglantine, and Rene Chevalier. Eglantine was given to the Chevalier family when she was a baby, and as she grew up in the family, it was a settled thing that when she was grown up, she would marry Rene, who was only a few years her senior.
Several years elapse, finding Eglantine with her biological aunt, away from the Chevalier's Huguenot household. She has a very fiery disposition, and as the king's persecutions of the Huguenots grows bolder and more outrageous, the angrier she becomes. A certain Henri La Roche appears on the scene: handsome, also passionate about the Huguenots (though not concrete in his own faith), and a captain in the King's army.
Then enter Rene, stage left; more level headed, and on his way to becoming a Huguenot physician, Rene still loves Eglantine deeply. Yet after he realizes that Henri and Eglantine are falling in love, he selflessly puts aside his own emotions and feelings and told Eglantine that she was free from their binding engagement.
Years pass; the persecutions for the Huguenots grew worse and worse. There is not a Huguenot family to be found; they are all in hiding. Since to say more would ruin the storyline, I will stop here, with just a little more: the story, though my review makes it sound like it, is not entirely about Rene and Eglantine, and Rene's selfless disinigration of their engagement. It is mainly about the persecution for the Faith, standing firm in that faith during persecution, and the deepening of true love......
Grace Raymond writes especially well, and until I found out that all of the Huguenot Inheritance series were published (with the exception of 2) over 100 years ago, I was seriously considering writing Ms. Raymond with the intention of encouraging her to write another book.

A silly favorite rediscovered

I first encountered this book in my public library when I was but a lad in school. I had not read the Dale Carnegie original which this parodies, but the twisted humor grabbed me from the dedication page. When I found it in a digital version, I did not hesitate to buy it. Parts of it now seem silly and puerile but after all these years I still guffaw.

Life changing and inspiring!

I first read the book over 40 years ago. It was a tattered first edition found at a book sale. It changed my life! I had mine re-bound in Genuine Leather with Gold Letters - as befitting a sacred text. It has a special place on my book shelf. There are powerful truths in this book. It's not for the feint of heart. Now that it's available in paperback my Christmas shopping is simplified. If, in fact, I gave Christmas Gifts. Because, if I did, then I obviously didn't take the lessons of this book to heart...

A Veritable Guide to Instant Disrepute

In 1936 Dale Carnegie, esteemed speaker and motivator, published his masterpiece on human relations entitled, How to Win Friends and Influence People. A year later, Irving Tressler followed up with a companion guide for those moving in the opposite direction.

I happened upon this oddity while browsing through the shelves of the library, and borrowed it to see what stuff the writer was made of. It must have been hard stuff. For in the book you will see chapters with headings like, How to Make People Dislike You Instantly; How to Make a Poor First Impression, Give a Dog a Bad Name, etc. Every single one lives up to its promise.

This book is sidesplitting; actually I got so weak laughing I could not lift it up. The entire text was swallowed up at one sitting (OK maybe one lying).

I admit it is entirely a parody of Dale Carnegie's work up to the introduction by Thomas Lowell (Carnegie's was by Lowell Thomas). Yet it is more than a caricature, because some of the advice can be applied. After all, who has not had an uncle Ernie who drops to the house unannounced, or a friend, Jimmy who pesters you to double date with him every weekend?

As you consider your mortality and your declining privacy, as you ponder how to enjoy these transient pleasures, you might just be tempted to apply the untried and untested principles of this exotic burlesque: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.
