A Godsend!

I saw this book on television and decided to order it. I was struggling with some horrendous health problems and doctors were confused and unable to stop the pain. One medication, led to another, then another and they were still looking at adding more. Upon the books arrival, I immediately looked up my medications and there it was...the begnning of my relief. I began to immediately supplement what one medication had robbed from my body and even was able to get off the medication. I had been struggling with debilitating migraines and headaches for months and the relief was immediate. My pain levels went from a 10 to a 5 within days and are now down to 2's and 3's on a regular basis. I also began working with a doctor who specializes in "Integrated Medicine" and is more than willing to help me with the dosages of needed supplements, etc.

It is my hope to be completely pain free one day soon and this book gives me much needed information to help bring my body to a state of wholeness and healing.
Thank you for writing this book ~ it was a Godsend and an answer to prayer for me!!!

Good Basic Info.....

This is a very good book which I will refer to frequently. It covers a large amount of synthetic drugs and their possible interactions with supplements and nutrients in your system. Certain synthetic drugs will deplete these nutrients in the body, so sometimes you'll need to add more than the usual dosage.

I personally like the chapters on the Vitamins and trace minerals. The Selenium chapter is a good read although I would have added to this chapter that Selenium is important for conversion of T4 to T3. These are thyroid hormones needed for the proper functioning of your thyroid gland. All in all, it's a good purchase and I'd buy one for your parents or anyone else who needs an up to date look at drugs and vitamins.

Essential for prescription pill takers!

The idea for this book is excellent. Cutting down the number of drugs you take is the best idea, but minimising some of the harm of the drugs you do still take just makes sense.

The book starts off by explaining that synthetic chemicals cure nothing and can leave you sicker as they deplete nutrients or make certain nutrients unusable by the body.

There are sections on most of the B vitamins as well as some of the minerals and other vitamins. They were quite detailed and made for interesting reading. A bit of information was included about the best forms of each nutrient which was good, and some brand recommendations were given for each nutrient. More sections including all the B vitamins and the minerals would have made the book a lot better and more complete. The dosages given seemed reasonable for most things and weren't those silly and out of date `2 mg of thiamine' type ones you still get in some recent books.

Newer concepts like the need for activated folate if you have an MTHFR polymorphism were included but in some parts they could have been a bit clearer. The information about how to test for MTHFR seemed out of date as the test is not expensive anymore. Synthetic folic acid is also recommended throughout the book which is no good if you have MTHFR and considering that many have MTHFR issues and do not know it is not ideal. Some good information about the benefits of activated folate was included however, even if it was quite basic. (I just heard a great interview with the author and Dr Ben Lynch, so I assume this issue will be fixed in future books!)

Some sections were a bit unclear on the details. In the CoQ10 section the benefits of ubiquinol (reduced CoQ10) over ubiquinone (CoQ10) were mentioned but then the dosage recommendations given didn't specify which type was being discussed. Later on the author mentions that 50 mg ubiquinol is the equivalent of 100 mg of ubiquinone which is helpful, although the 2x figure is quite different to others I have read (e.g. between 3 and 4x by cardiologist Dr Sinatra.) But even knowing that it's still not clear which form was referred to in the given dosages.

The term folic acid is used interchangeably with 5-MTHF at times and this is incorrect. To say that vitamin C causes kidney stones is also incorrect. Tofu is listed as a source of vitamin B12 but actually B12 experts say that plant foods such as tofu in fact contain B12 analogues which do not give the body any of the B12 it needs and also block the absorption of B12 from other sources. They mimic B12 in some ways but the body can't use them as B12. These foods should actually be avoided if B12 is low.

There is a bit of vegetarian bias in the book which was disappointing. Soy is listed as a food that significantly lowers thyroid hormone levels yet the recommendation is not to avoid soy, but to just take more thyroid hormone. That's pretty bad advice. Soy is not a health food! (See `The Whole Soy Story' book.) Beta carotene is listed as far better and safer to take than preformed vitamin A form animal foods, despite the fact many of us convert beta carotene to vitamin A very poorly. Getting some real vitamin A in foods such as liver is not dangerous and is in fact an extremely healthy choice. Liver is the real superfood.

Agave nectar is mentioned as a safer sweetener (?) and grape seed oil is mentioned as an oil to cook with and protein powders are listed as healthy foods. The nutritional information in this book is not great and the book would have been better if it were all omitted as this seems to be not the authors speciality. Some outdated and wrong information is included.

Probably the worst part is when the author talks about how stupid and mad you'd have to be to eat a high fat diet and so get your arteries `all clogged up' dangerously. The author really needs to do some more recent reading on this topic and why the saturated fat = heart disease hypothesis is junk science. Plus on why low carb or ketogenic diets can be very healthy as well and are in no way `as bad for you' as low fat diets as the author claims. Books like Primal Body, Primal Mind and The Great Cholesterol Con and Know Your Fats and many others explain these facts well.

I most liked the bits of the book where the author talked about the more cutting edge information on the superiority of activated forms of B2, B6 and B12 as well as folate. I took lots of notes. Almost nobody discusses who needs the active forms of each nutrient and why. Few experts even recommend coenzymated vitamins - especially B2. But if you have low thyroid levels, poor digestion, low stomach acid or gut flora issues then taking your B2 in the activated form is actually a very good idea as you may convert the standard form to the active form very poorly. The Thorne products which contain activated forms of the B vitamins were listed too, which is great. More people need to know about those high quality products.

Some of the general information about why drugs wont cure you was also very good, as were the sections on why the RDI of nutrients has nothing to do with the optimum level for each person, how much nutrient needs vary per person and stage of life, and why what is important is the optimum level of a nutrient - not merely the RDI. The RDIs for most nutrients are ridiculously low.

Overall this book is an essential read for anyone taking prescription medications. Hopefully it will help people cut down on drugs a lot and also make it safer to take those few that may remain. The information is not quite comprehensive enough to be a sole source of information about supplements and nutrients but it's a very good start. Recommended reading for anyone taking prescription or OTC drugs daily. 3.5 stars.

About the Author
Robert A. Dobie, MD, is clinical professor of otolaryngology at both the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the University of California, Davis, as well as partner in Dobie Associates, providing consultation in hearing, balance, hearing conservation, and ear disorders. After medical school and residency training at Stanford University, Dr. Dobie completed fellowships in auditory physiology and otoneurosurgery. His previous positions included professor at the University of Washington, department chair at UTHSCA and director of extramural research at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health. He is past president of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, past chair of the Hearing and Equilibrium Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and has served on the boards and councils of many other professional organizations and scholarly journals. Dr. Dobie’s research interests include age-related and noise-induced hearing loss, hearing conservation, and tinnitus, and he is the author of more than 200 publications.

I have worked as an audiologist for 37 years with 25 of those years devoted full-time to hearing loss prevention. Robert Dobie’s “Medical-Legal Evaluation of Hearing Loss”, beginning with the First Edition, has been a practical and essential reference text on my desk. As I began providing consultation services within my private practice, I was extremely pleased to learn of the release of the Third Edition. This version provides an updated view into many emerging issues related to occupational hearing loss, diagnostics, recreational hearing loss, forensic audiology, etc. Dr. Dobie’s inclusion of the 2013 revision of ISO-1999 is an especially useful update. Although one can find various sources of information scattered around the Internet, it is extremely helpful to have a consolidated and authoritative source that brings together all aspects of this very complex subject. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in workers’ compensation, disability determination, or forensic activities related to hearing loss.

Journalist Block certainly did his homework for this book. He conducted dozens of interviews to produce a detailed and balanced view of the launch of a fourth major television network. He traces how Fox Televison, created in 1987 by a new management team at one-time failing Twentieth Century Fox, got off to a slow start but then gained credibility, viewers, and advertisers with two successful shows, 21 Jump Street and Married . . . With Children . Unfortunately, Block seems to have used every word of every interview in this book and includes bios for each player, making the reading heavy going at times. The story does pick up, however, when Block discusses the 1989 hiring and subsequent firing of Joan Rivers for The Late Show , a factor, Rivers says in this book, in her husband's suicide. An Interesting Look at the Birth of a Network

First off, one should immediately disregard JHW's review of this book. JHW has apparently confused this book with the documentary film of the same name. (Which is particularly evident in the book's copyright date, 1990, many years before Fox News Channel came to be.) There is absolutely nothing about the Fox News Channel in this book. Absolutely nothing.

Outfoxed (the book) tells the story of the birth of the Fox television network (again, **not** the cable news channel!). The book is divided roughly into equal thirds: the first third deals with the tangled saga of the Twentieth Century-Fox studio, its struggles to remain afloat, and its ownership by Marvin Davis (and later buyout by Rupert Murdoch). The middle third deals with the launch of the Fox Broadcasting Company and focuses primarily on what was intended to be the new network's crown jewel, "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers". Finally, the last spends its time on the growing pains of the new network, trying to find a programming foothold (and ratings success) while pushing the definitions of quality, acceptability and decency to their limits.

Honestly, in reading this book, I could have done without the first third. Lots of history of Twentieth Century-Fox (the film studio), lots of behind-the-scenes stories of the studio's troubles and power struggles. This was supposed to be a book about a television network, and some background on Fox's history is certainly important, but 80 pages? After reading this book, I found myself thinking I could have simply picked it up at page 70 and not really missed out on anything needed to enjoy the rest of the book.

The remainder of the book makes for a somewhat nostalgic look back at Fox; much of the action in the book took place twenty years ago. Some of the shows discussed are still on the air--"America's Most Wanted" and "Cops"; some are gone but remembered--"21 Jump Street", "Married...with Children"; and others are simply forgotten to the mists of time--"Beyond Tomorrow", "Mr. President", "Totally Hidden Videos". Along the way, the careers of Barry Diller, Jamie Kellner, Garth Ancier, Kevin Wendle, Peter Chernin, and many others are detailed.

Overall, it's a good read for anyone interested in television history (particularly as Fox is still around and the current can be readily compared to the past).

And again, this book has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the Fox News Channel. (Indeed, one of the most interesting tidbits in this book: Rupert Murdoch's support for the presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter in 1980...go figure!)

The truth about fox's purposeful biasing of news!

Inside this book you'll find some disturbing and interesting information on how fox has twisted the news to support its owner's politics over fact and truth. This kind of stuff scares me and makes me feel justified in watching the BBC and CBC for internation news over some american owned nation/internation networks.

Written by Randolph Scott's son, this book gives us an inside look at a truly wonderful man, his passions, his films, his devotion to his family, friends and his craft. If you're looking for a "Who Slept With Who," you won't find it here.

A loving tribute from his son.

It has been MANY years since this book was published, and given that Mr. Scott never gave interviews, it is the most complete glimpse into the life of this famous actor.
This is not a biography. You won't find a play-by-play mention of movies, or a book filled with gossip about other star's lives. There isn't any hatred in the book, no pining for what might have been. Rather, this is a tribute by a son about the values of his father, actor and businessman Randolph Scott.
C.H. Scott so aptly describes the way he was raised --with great care, consideration, and patience. What the reader takes away is that Randolph Scott was a gentleman, husband, and father above being an actor and producer. Above all, this is a terrific look at how as a parent , Randolph Scott handled his rambunctious son, and how-- patience, consistency, and love (even in the toughest of times) would not only be the right solution, in the end, teach the most lessons.
While the media --from Vanity Fair to bloggers, have pointedly ignored this book in favor of pushing out unsubstantiated rumors, C.H. Scott also clears the air about the alleged affair between Cary Grant and Mr Scott. According to him, they're untrue. The rumors started when a male nurse, in the last months of Mr Scott's life, stole an album of publicity stills. These stills of the two men, were posed at the direction of a studio publicist in anticipation of a new film. These photos are now touted as "truth" by mainstream media and blogs characterizing the two as a couple. If anything, what they show is a fun friendship between the two men.
Readers will be pleasantly surprised that this is an account of a very thoughtful man's life, and how he positively affected the son he raised.

A graduate of The University of Michigan, Eric spent his early career in the sporting goods industry before spending 10 years working for DuPont Engineering Plastics, where he provided expertise on material selection and plastic part design to a select group of major manufacturers.

For the past twenty years he has worked as a consulting engineer, helping companies bridge the gap between development and production. Some of the products he has helped bring to market include washing machines for Whirlpool, power tools for Skil®, cell phones for Motorola and Nokia, and the Humalog® / Humulin® insulin pen for Eli Lilly.

In 2006 he founded Art of Mass Production, an engineering consulting company based in San Diego, California. AMP provides services to manufacturing companies in the consumer electronics, wireless, and medical device industries. Eric is also moderator of the blog site plasticsguy.com, where he writes about plastics technology, and its effect on people and the planet. His newest book Thermoplastic Materials Selection: A Practical Guide is scheduled for release in 2015.

I found this book to be an excellent resource for all aspects of the plastics industry and material selection process - including design considerations, mechanical properties, surface and aesthetic properies, processing recommendations to achieving required properties, and more.

In addition to material selection, there is great guidinace and tools on cost engineering, along with working with suppliers, and production workflows.

Review of "Thermoplastic Material Selection"

I really enjoyed this book. Mr. Larson wrote a great book for many people wanting to know more about plastics, especially those who wish to understand why they should select one material versus another.

His book is no stoic ream filled with laboriously gathered, carefully sorted and elaborately presented data. The clue is in the title: " ... A Practical Guide". People looking for a treatise brimming with data and peppered with minutia should continue looking. Yes, therein one will find tables, charts and graphs. Even pictures - many, in 256K color. Those are means to an end not, the end, itself.

This book contains interesting and curious nibbles regarding how plastics got to be where they are in today's world. The information is presented in semi-narrative format - as narrative as a story about selecting plastic can be. The book endeavors to explain the branches of the plastic family. Understanding how families behave can help the designer make choices about which characteristics are important. Once the characteristics are decided, the material selects itself.

There are micro stories regarding economics to be considered with material performance and fabrication of one material or another. There are sections about material science and physics and thermodynamics. Yet, these are not dull and dreary, iron butt filibusters amid a hail of Alphas and Betas and Gammas oh, my. Rather, they are brief and effective introductions to the partially informed or the curious and reminders to the once informed yet presently underpracticed. Inside is a trove of information about the trade-offs involved in selecting materials and methods.

Somewhere short of two thirds into the book (possibly, the Golden Ratio point) the Artist inside Mr. Larson takes over. He's an unconventional artist. Who defines art using formulae? Yet, in an amazing way, he quantifies the sensory aspects of material selection. Near the end, he delves into a dimensionless attribute: feel. This characteristic times that quality to the power of trait equals Wow! Or, something like that.

Plastics Handbook

With over thirty years of experience in the industry, this is the best comprehensive story of plastics that I have ever seen. It is a cornucopia of knowledge, blended with well founded humor. It even reads as a good trade advertisement. I love the way that "plasticsguy.com" is front and center on page 318 under 8.4.2 education. It is a regular "hitchhiker's guide to the plastics galaxy”.
