About the Author
Eric R. Larson is a mechanical engineer with over thirty years experience in plastics design. He has helped developed products ranging from boogie boards, water basketball games, and SCUBA diving equipment to disposable lighters, cell phones, and hand-held medical devices. A graduate of The University of Michigan, Eric spent his early career in the sporting goods industry before spending 10 years working for DuPont Engineering Plastics, where he provided expertise on material selection and plastic part design to a select group of major manufacturers.
For the past twenty years he has worked as a consulting engineer, helping companies bridge the gap between development and production. Some of the products he has helped bring to market include washing machines for Whirlpool, power tools for Skil®, cell phones for Motorola and Nokia, and the Humalog® / Humulin® insulin pen for Eli Lilly.
In 2006 he founded Art of Mass Production, an engineering consulting company based in San Diego, California. AMP provides services to manufacturing companies in the consumer electronics, wireless, and medical device industries. Eric is also moderator of the blog site plasticsguy.com, where he writes about plastics technology, and its effect on people and the planet. His newest book Thermoplastic Materials Selection: A Practical Guide is scheduled for release in 2015.

I found this book to be an excellent resource for all aspects of the plastics industry and material selection process - including design considerations, mechanical properties, surface and aesthetic properies, processing recommendations to achieving required properties, and more.
In addition to material selection, there is great guidinace and tools on cost engineering, along with working with suppliers, and production workflows.

Review of "Thermoplastic Material Selection"

I really enjoyed this book. Mr. Larson wrote a great book for many people wanting to know more about plastics, especially those who wish to understand why they should select one material versus another.
His book is no stoic ream filled with laboriously gathered, carefully sorted and elaborately presented data. The clue is in the title: " ... A Practical Guide". People looking for a treatise brimming with data and peppered with minutia should continue looking. Yes, therein one will find tables, charts and graphs. Even pictures - many, in 256K color. Those are means to an end not, the end, itself.
This book contains interesting and curious nibbles regarding how plastics got to be where they are in today's world. The information is presented in semi-narrative format - as narrative as a story about selecting plastic can be. The book endeavors to explain the branches of the plastic family. Understanding how families behave can help the designer make choices about which characteristics are important. Once the characteristics are decided, the material selects itself.
There are micro stories regarding economics to be considered with material performance and fabrication of one material or another. There are sections about material science and physics and thermodynamics. Yet, these are not dull and dreary, iron butt filibusters amid a hail of Alphas and Betas and Gammas oh, my. Rather, they are brief and effective introductions to the partially informed or the curious and reminders to the once informed yet presently underpracticed. Inside is a trove of information about the trade-offs involved in selecting materials and methods.
Somewhere short of two thirds into the book (possibly, the Golden Ratio point) the Artist inside Mr. Larson takes over. He's an unconventional artist. Who defines art using formulae? Yet, in an amazing way, he quantifies the sensory aspects of material selection. Near the end, he delves into a dimensionless attribute: feel. This characteristic times that quality to the power of trait equals Wow! Or, something like that.

Plastics Handbook

With over thirty years of experience in the industry, this is the best comprehensive story of plastics that I have ever seen. It is a cornucopia of knowledge, blended with well founded humor. It even reads as a good trade advertisement. I love the way that "plasticsguy.com" is front and center on page 318 under 8.4.2 education. It is a regular "hitchhiker's guide to the plastics galaxy”.
