wide range of materials
By W Boudville
Bhat gives a comprehensive description of the different types of materials that are surgically inserted into the body. Starting with the basics; namely the biological tolerance of the body to various implanted metals. These metals might form part or most of prostheses. Then there are numerous ceramics. Most important of which could be alumina, which can be inert even after years [decades] inside the body. It is highly corrosion and wear resistant, and strong. Hence its use in hip implants, as a load bearing structure.

The book also devotes extensive space to polymers, both synthetic and biopolymers. Another class of "natural" implants are tissue grafts. Here, issues of rejection by the immune system figure prominently.

Readers who need implants might consult this book as good background. As a broad second opinion on what their surgeons propose.

There is no discussion of nanostructure materials. These still lie in the future.

Too many words, too few ideas
By DesignsINC
I bought this book because there was a lack of information on the beverage industry, but I found this book to contain too few ideas and was always just leading up to "the next thing" without delivering much actionable information. He also has a blog out there, but I find it is a lot of "marketing talk", he hypes a lot of things up and doesn't bring clarity to the beverage industry for first timers.

If you want to learn about the beverage industry, you're better off spending 50 bucks on joining up at BeverageSchool (dot) com. They have many insiders and consultants delivering up real actionable information and clarity about what it really takes. For example one of the guys (can't think of his name at the moment), he says normally it will take at least $20k to startup, though he seen some people really bootstrap it for $10k or a little less, but it's very rare. It's that kind of info that I need to know. Also I learned that sampling is the most effective for marketing strategy, even more so than celebrity endorsement, it has 40% conversion rate.

Anyways, that's just my 2 cents of what I found to be the most helpful available online.

Back to the book, I would've just gave the book one star, but I figured it did offer some information and wasn't completely drivel. But I wouldn't waste your time.

Great book for anyone who is playing with the idea ...
By Kaisdaddy
Great book for anyone who is playing with the idea of developing his or her own beverage and bringing it to market. This book is quite thorough although it is written to be a quick read and by necessity skims over some items, mentioning them but not going into more detail. The author has a consulting firm to help people navigate this industry and in some ways the book underscores the need to have an experienced partner or consultant in your corner. Having said that, the book is a great introduction to the industry and everything involved. You will come away from the read having a great idea of what it takes to make your beverage venture a success. You will either be excited to get started or continue on your quest or you may decide it's more effort than you want to put forth. Either way, I think the book will have done its job.

Not considered a real book by any means.
By NickTC
I never write reviews. I make an exception here because this book is terrible. Brad Smith's review is SPOT ON! Even the passages he quotes from the book are WORD FOR WORD. The entire book spends pages and pages telling you everything you will learn LATER in the book--- and when you get to the second half of the book, it reminds you of everything you JUST READ, which was just the author telling you what you're GOING TO READ! I'm not exaggerating. I'm not being histrionic. The book is a gigantic exercise in temperance. And worse, it reads as if it's written by a fourth grader writing a book report the night before. If you remove the fluff, self-promotion, and incoherence, the book is twenty pages long. Even that's too generous.

Please don't buy this book. Save your money.

Camino Real (New Directions Paperbook), by Tennessee Williams

Now with a new introduction, the author's original Foreword and Afterword, the one-act play 10 Blocks on the Camino Real, plus an essay by noted Tennessee Williams scholar, Michael Paller.

In this phantasmagorical play, the Camino Real is a dead end, a police state in a vaguely Latin American country, and an inescapable condition. Characters from history and literature―Don Quixote, Casanova, Camille, Lord Byron―inhabit a place where corruption and indifference have immobilized and nearly destroyed the human spirit. Then, into this netherworld, the archetypal Kilroy arrives―a sailor and all-American guy with “a heart as big as the head of baby.” Celebrated American playwright John Guare has written an illuminative Introduction for this edition. Also included are Williams’ original Foreword and Afterword to the play, the one-act play Ten Blocks on the Camino Real, plus an essay by noted Tennessee Williams scholar Michael Paller.

Review
“Camino Real has a very small bull's eye. It's difficult to hit, but when you do, when you do - the world's a brand new place.” (John Guare)

“There are people who think that Camino Real was Tennessee Williams' best play and I believe that they are right. It is a play torn out of a human soul.” (Clive Barnes - The New York Times)

From the Back Cover
When first produced in 1953 Camino Real confounded critics and confused audiences. It was scarcely a success. Later productions in Los Angeles and New York indicated that the public had caught up with this work and could face its picture of our world--grim but not without magnificence.

About the Author
Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) is the acclaimed author of many books of letters, short stories, poems, essays, and a large collection of plays, including The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Camino Real, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending, The Night of the Iguana, and The Rose Tattoo.

Abstract; symbolic; unlike any of Williams' other plays
By Frank Cunat
Anyone expecting Camino Real to be anything like the other plays Tennessee Williams wrote during the same period, such as Summer and Smoke or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, will be puzzled. This is unlike anything else Williams wrote; it's nonlinear, overtly symbolic, lacking a conventional plot, and filled with images that don't make literal sense even as they speak directly to the subconscious. I think it could be Williams' most brilliant work, but others will prefer his more accessible plays and I don't dispute that. "Camino Real" is unusual and will not be for everyone.
In the play Williams deals with end-of-life issues in a very stark way; he also explores how a person's own fears can keep him or her from moving beyond the comfort of the familiar into unknown territory. I have to confess: I read the play after seeing it and being bowled over by the production (at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington), and the question may be whether those who haven't seen it will find it equally powerful just to read it. This is a case where I think they may; the plays' symbols and images come alive in the imagination. Even if you don't like it, you'll find it thoughtful and challenging.

Camino Real
By Robin Friedman
Tennessee Williams 1953 play, "Camino Real" differed markedly from his early successful Broadway works, including "The Glass Menagerie", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Summer and Smoke", and "The Rose Tattoo". Williams wrote these works in a romantically realistic way with plots and development of character. "Camino Real" broke from this pattern in its expressivist, non-linear style. The play has a surreal feel with characters who drift in and out of its strange symbolic setting. Williams wrote and rewrote the play based upon an early effort, "Ten Blocks on the Camino Real". When "Camino Real" opened on Broadway under Elia Kazan's direction, it received mixed, predominantly negative reviews together with a great deal of controversy. The play closed after 60 performances. It was the first of Williams' Broadway failures. In its obscure style, the play foreshadows other works of late Williams, which largely failed, following "The Night of the Iguana
in 1961.

"Camino Real" is set in a small town presumably located in Mexico but a product of imagination. As described in the play, the town has an expensive section dominated by a fancy hotel, the Siete Mares, which borders on a skid row. The skid row includes a dreadful flophouse, a pawn shop, and a fortune-telling stall run by a Gypsy. Beyond the town stretches a mountain and a desert. In a Prologue to the play Don Quixote's sidekick Sancho Panza says of Camino Real that "the spring of humanity has gone dry in this place."

The play includes many characters, some of whom are historical, some are drawn from literary works, and some are contemporary. Characters wandering through Camino Real include Don Quixote, Sancho, Lord Byron, Casanova, Marguerite, Esmeralda, and more. The town also has its own mysterious permanent residents, including Gutman, the owner of the Siete Mares who also narrates the play, the owners of the pawn shop and flop houses, blind singers, aging prostitutes and the Streetsweepers, who serve as police and henchmen and discourage the expression of free thought or romance in the town. The major character in the play is Kilroy, 27, an American and former championship boxer on the skids who is cast into Camino Real with only memories of his past successes. Kilroy has been told he doesn't have long to live. He suffers from a bad heart which has expanded in his chest to the "size of the head of a baby."

The characters in "Camino Real" tell their stories and interact in strange impressionistic ways which owe as much to the setting and to symbols as to the script. The thread of Kilroy's story runs through the work. He is robbed and then humiliated when forced to work as a "patsy" in the Sieta Mares. When Esmeralda, a prostitute and the alleged daughter of the Gypsy, regains her virginity by the light of the full moon, as is her wont, she and Kilroy have a paid relationship which strangely blossoms into feeling on both sides. In a strange sequence, Kilroy loses his money and his golden gloves to the pawn shop and also loses his expanded golden heart. But the play suggests that Kilroy recovers something of his soul and spirit at the end.

"Camino Real" is an unabashedly romantic play. Its many characters are aged, dissilusioned and burned out and strive with varying degrees of success to regain their zest for life, creativity, and passion. As is often the case in Williams' plays, the characters tend to be the heart of the playwright writ large. The plays succeed to the extent that Williams is able to universalize his feelings. "Camino Real" concerns itself with artists, outcasts, and losers. The tone of the work reminded me of Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl" which would be written two years later. Indeed, "Camino Real" has been described as the first "bop" play. Here is one of the key monologues of the play spoken by the prostitute Esmeralda, Kilroy's lover.

" God bless all con men and hustlers and pitchmen who hawk their hearts on the street, all two-time losers who're likely to lose once more, the courtesan who made the mistake of love, the greatest of lovers crowned with the longest horns, the poet who wandered far from his heart's green country and possibly will and possibly won't be able to find his way back, look down with a smile tonight on the last cavaliers, the ones with the rusty armor and soiled white plumes, and visit with understanding and something that's almost tender those fading legends that come and go in this plaza like songs not clearly remembered, oh, sometime and somewhere, let there be something to mean the word honor again!"

Subsequent to its initial Broadway failure, there have been attempts over the years to revive "Camino Real". The work continues to provoke widely varying responses. In addition to its obscurity, the play is difficult to perform due to its length, its large cast, and its elaborate, costly setting. I saw the play when it was performed at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. some years ago and had difficulty with it. It is not hard to understand that the play would be hard to grasp by an unsuspecting audience watching it on the stage. I also had trouble with the play when I read and reread it. It is not an easy work to grasp and requires patience. If not one of Williams' more successful works, it is poetical and rewarding. John Lahr's biography, "Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh" discusses "Camino Real" in detail and encouraged me to revisit the play. In addition to this New Directions edition, "Camino Real" is available in the first of the two Library of America volumes devoted to the plays of Tennessee Williams.

An Interesting Failure
By Gary F. Taylor
Toward the end of his life, Swedish dramatist August Strindberg wrote two plays that would prove highly influential: A DREAM PLAY and THE GHOST SONATA, both of which attempted to recreate the internal logical of dreams. Strindberg and his plays, especially these two, had a significant impact on Tennessee Williams (1911-1983), a writer who might be best described as a "poetic realist;" his stories and characters are often quite sordid, but he treats them with a tenderness and a pity and a quality of speech that renders them poetic. One of Williams most extreme efforts in this direction was TEN BLOCKS ON THE CAMINO REAL, a 1946 one-act that was first staged by The Actor's Studio in 1949. Williams continued to work with the material, and in 1953 he presented the full-length CAMINO REAL on Broadway.

There is no plot per se, but instead a series of interconnected scenes in which various characters cross paths, ultimately creating a vision that mixes gallantry and futility. The characters--many of them drawn from classic works of fiction--find themselves stranded in a nameless town in a nameless country on a street called Camino Real, where starvation and death are merely moments away and escape seems impossible. The primary characters are Kilroy, an American boxer who becomes involved with a Gypsy and her daughter Esmerelda, and Casanova and Marguerite, famous lovers who are past their youth and under ever-increasing pressure. Hotel proprietor Guttman, a character borrowed from Sidney Greenstreet's performances in THE MALTESE FALCON and CASABLANCA, oversees their struggles--and the activities of the street cleaners, personifications of death that clear the dead and dying away. Perhaps the peak of the action occurs when an aircraft lands, taking some away, leaving others behind to cope with their fate as best they may.

Characters sing, dance, pawn their possessions, attempt to seduce each other, die, escape, remain to fade, weaving in and out through the surrealistic set that centers on a dry fountain. The ultimate result is often memorable, often poignant, but it was not strong enough to succeed on Broadway, and it closed after sixty performances. The size of the cast has made revivals difficult, but a few have occurred, usually to the same reaction: Williams scholars are fascinated and the public is puzzled and at times annoyed by what they perceive as the plays pretension. This particular edition includes a preface, which is not particularly helpful, and closing essay, which is somewhat interesting, and both the full length and the one act versions of the play. It's certainly worth reading, but although it has moments of fascination, CAMINO REAL is ultimately an interesting failure.

More people than ever before are joining the "cult of heritage" and searching for their "roots". Lowenthal exposes and examines our new fascination with ancestry and how it has separated us from one another and caused us to distort history. With erudition and style, Lowenthal has captured an important and compelling trend.

Amazon.com Review
The more things change, the more we become nostalgic about the way they once were. Perhaps because we dread the present we are tempted to seek sanctuary in our "heritage" -- a broad term that can include everything from the Pyramids at Giza to old Elvis records -- says David Lowenthal (author of The Past is a Foreign Country). At its best, the preservation of our heritage allows us to form communities and maintain vital traditions. At its worst, it abuses real history for chauvinistic gain.

From Kirkus Reviews
A keenly observant, if at times pretentious, exploration of identity politics writ large at the national level. What Lowenthal (Geography/University College, London) calls ``the cult of heritage'' is seen today in historical theme parks; museum and commemorative policy; child adoption; a booming illicit trade in art and antiquities; and most ominously, in xenophobia, racism, and genocide. Frequently heritage involves a national or ethnic trauma that needs to be recalled, such as the Holocaust for the Jews, the Potato Famine for the Irish, and the wars that kept Poland subjugated for years. At times, however, this emphasis sparks a kind of victim politics that brooks no disagreements and can even lead to a cycle of mutual grievances and bloodshed, as in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and the Middle East. Unlike history, Lowenthal notes, heritage makes no attempt at objectivity as it views the past with present-minded purpose. Heritage further deforms the past because it is ``popularized, commoditized and politicized,'' in the form of kitschy theme parks like Disney's aborted Historyland and the more ambitious if still somewhat misleading Williamsburg (where management is still uncertain how fully to depict slavery in this colonial capital). Lowenthal is especially canny about heritage as an all-consuming growth industry, noting that Stonehenge is now protected from predatory tourists by barbed wire. However, he has caught more than the net of his argument can reasonably hold (it's a wide range from essentially liberal curatorial issues to the horrors of genocide), and his prose aims for high-flown rhetoric when a little earthiness might have been helpful. Moreover, he never really shows the reader how to separate the wheat of heritage (its function as ``creative act'') from the chaff (the many faults he describes). Still, a provocative examination of how nations worship at, and are sometimes sacrificed on, the altar of memory. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Intriguing, but disagreeable and contradictory
By Ranger Reub
Did apartments in ancient Rome have doors? Did medieval towns stink? Did 17th century clothes itch? Unfortunately we don't know the answer to any of these curious questions, David Lowenthal points out in his book Possessed by the Past, because no one at the time felt such commonplaces worth recording (114). Heritage, however, has become all too commonplace, at the expense of history, Lowenthal chides in his follow-up volume to the sometimes praised, often controversial The Past is a Foreign Country.

Many of Lowenthal's arguments are intriguing. He explains that heritage now pervades modern society, especially in the West. He contends that heritage to many is escapist, permitting a person to hold on to something more stable in an uncertain world and often sentiments towards that stability override substantial concerns. Technophobia nurtures heritage and its growth reflects fears of a menacing future (10-11). Possessed by the Past shows that heritage, like history, faces continuous shifting attitudes and reinterpretations. Commemoration has transferred from personal to collective, elite to popular subjects (63). For instance, statues worldwide pay homage to the anonymous fallen, such as the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, rather than generals and admirals. Formerly taboo to come from a commoner background, these days such lineage has morphed to the chic (16).

While discussing the upsurge of heritage nowadays, Lowenthal at times contradicts himself. The first chapter describes a current "heritage glut," saying that archivists, specifically, keep everything, which causes chaos by making "augmented heritage" less accessible and "suffocatingly unmanageable" (12). Later in the book he seems to advocate saving everything and encourages an emotional attachment to the items saved to make them more meaningful for heirs, saying, "self-regard supplants intergenerational generosity (52).

In an underlying disagreeable tone, Lowenthal asserts that heritage is the antithesis of history, but unfortunately it takes him until Chapter five to concretely define heritage, though the book focuses on the word from its first page. At that point, he muses that heritage is "a declaration of faith in that past" (121). Heritage to him "uses historical traces and tells historical tales," but "exaggerates and omits, candidly invents and frankly forgets, and thrives on ignorance and error" (121). Succinctly, what counts in heritage "is not checkable fact but credulous allegiance," while history's chief hallmark is testable truth (120-121). His arguments would be more easily understood and interpreted had he made the reader know how he defined heritage from the very beginning.

Group solidarity is innate to forming and fostering heritage; Lowenthal ruminates in his conclusion (248). Heritage in his eyes builds collective pride and purpose (249). However, in the first chapter of the volume he expressly states that heritage is self-defeating, that loving things too much destroys them (27). So, in essence, heritage brings people together to destroy what they love. In the vernacular of many a student in today's age, Lowenthal concludes through the pages of Possessed by the Past: "Heritage bites, but dude, at least it brings people together once in a while."

A Provocative, but not always convincing, Discussion of the Heritage Industry
By Roger D. Launius
I first became interested in the issue of heritage during the preparations for the centennial of flight of the Wrights brothers celebrated in 2003. This book explores the rise of commemorations and heritage, and what it portends for the serious study of history. In one form or another commemorations of important historical events have been with us since humans have counted time. Always serving several objectives at once, in the United States these have often taken the form of publicly-recognized national holidays that enhance civic pride and national unity. The Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and the like are official commemorations designed explicitly to serve the decidedly nationalistic purpose of forging and reinforcing the cohesiveness of a people within a common memory. Memory of the past reigns supreme in such commemorations, it represents the personification of what David Lowenthal calls "heritage." His definition of heritage, and its relationship to history, is instructive: "History is the past that actually happened, heritage a partisan perversion, the past manipulated for some present aim" (p. 102)

As Lowenthal comments, the differences between this heritage--essentially what we choose to remember about the past, what some have called the "digested past"--and the unrecoverable past that is never truly knowable at all because of the inexactitude with which historians are able to discover it, sets up an enormous difficulty for historians involved in public commemoration. Heritage provides the glue that holds together the group in an instable world. Like a predator stalking weak members of a herd dissension seems to range freely over the landscape, and in a multicultural nation such as the United States the cacophony of competing ideas and issues, priorities and prerogatives thrive. Heritage, of course, helps to forge a unique identity that is real and powerful and all-encompassing, and in the processing helps define ourselves and our nation.

As a nation, Americans seem enthralled with their past and deploy it at every opportunity to achieve benefits defined differently by different groups and times. Those may range from lofty principles identifiable as such by all too crass economic motives to sinister objectives based on self-regarding chauvinism and hatred of other groups. In such a climate commemorations of historical events become the tools, or perhaps weapons, used in contorting historical truth to the ends of the group supervising the commemoration. This is, at a fundamental level, the concern that Lowenthal voices throughout "Possessed by the Past." Such activities, he warns, falsify history by succumbing to "chauvinist, shallow, vulgar, commercial, and mendacious perversions" (p. 104). As he puts it, history "differs from heritage not, as people generally supposed, in telling the truth, but in trying to do so despite being aware that truth is a chameleon and its chroniclers fallible beings. The most crucial distinction is that truth in heritage commits us to some present creed; truth in history is a flawed effort to understand the past on its own terms" (p. 119).

In "Possessed by the Past" Lowenthal ranges from special commemorations to the battle over Disney's "Historyland," the frenzied search for Elvis memorabilia, the challenges of Colonial Williamsburg, the lack of historical understanding displayed in the animated Disney film "Pocahontas," and a host of other skirmishes in the heritage wars of the 1990s. He notes that these activities pose a threat to historical understanding. "Such acts," he insists, "undeniably deform history for heritage aims; and heritage is further corrupted by being popularized, commoditized, and politicized" (p. 87).

At sum, Lowenthal can see no middle ground in what he contends is, as his subtitle notes, "the heritage crusade and the spoils of history." History as a discipline and a body of knowledge arrived at through a distinct methodology must hold a line that ensures its credibility as it faces an onslaught from popularizers, pundits, politicians, and partnerships that seek to use it for their own ends. He believes that the heritage industry is less interested in reality and verifiable concepts than in popular recreations that capture "the spirit of the age." So while history and heritage are intertwined Lowenthal does not see them as the same thing and those differences need to be made clear to all and guarded carefully in the future.

"Possessed by the Past" is a powerfully evocative book that sounds an alarm for the historical profession. At times, however, I found it infuriating, even as I found it always provocative and reflective. Lowenthal has a rather bitter perspective on the history/heritage debate. No doubt that is the result of wounds suffered in numerous battles. I am sympathetic to that situation, having experienced a few myself, but sometimes he displays his own sullenness too aggressively. For example, his "pox on both your houses" commentary is over the top. "To bolster heritage faith with historical scholarship, as is now the fashion, smudges the line between fact and faith," he writes, and "to embrace heritage as history cedes it a credence it neither asks for nor deserves" (p. 250). I believe that withdrawal from the field of battle into the proverbial ivory towers of academia does not represent a strategy for success in combating the "heritage movement" in the United States. Engagement, and offering course corrections for heritage efforts, is the only appropriate answer. To do otherwise ensures victory for those who would use history inappropriately for their own ends.

and how people think about / reconstruct the past – makes the critical distinction between history and heritage – history when i
By Andrew Adelmann
I flagged this recently in generating a list of influential (for me) books I’ve read, over the past 33 years. This one was influential in terms of my thinking about history, and how people think about / reconstruct the past – makes the critical distinction between history and heritage – history when it’s practiced in good faith is about trying to understand the past on its own terms (what really happened, what life was like for the people then) whereas heritage is about the uses of the past to serve some agenda in the present. It’s impossible to make a clean distinction – the idea of history as objective is an illusion – one’s own agenda which is unavoidably influenced by present concerns, will always influence the agenda of any effort to study or write about history. A book about e.g. ancient Greece that’s written today would be different from one written 100 yrs ago, because today’s concerns are different so we understand that era and its significance for us, differently than people would have early in the 20th century.
Nonetheless the history / heritage distinction seems valid – an important reminder of the challenge of putting yourself into the past, the difficulty of understanding what it was like in past eras, more challenging probably the further back you go. Also, I recall the author mentioned that museums are mostly about heritage rather than history, something I have kept in mind in museum visits since.

But, these conditions are far from normal. Todd Barrington, a poor, shy lad, has been unable to speak with the one who has caught his eye – Crystal Blake a gal totally out of his league. Not only is she the prettiest girl in school, she is smart and wealthy to boot. But, she also has a secret, and no one must find out. As a strange turn of events, these two top students have been chosen to compete for a full four-year scholarship at the prestigious Cambridge University. In order to do so, they must travel to England. For Todd the cost of such a trip is a deal breaker, but just days before the deadline, a mysterious benefactor turns up. Now the trip is on and the two are destined to be together, on what is to become a fatal crash, on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. The pilots are dead, the plane is in shreds, and only one resourceful young man is able to emerge from the debris. The only other passenger is found lying on the water soaked ground, her head partially covered in mud, strapped to her seat. Certain that Crystal is dead, Todd cried out above the raging storm. No one could possibly imagine the loneliness of such a tragic experience. But, he must act quickly for it suddenly becomes a matter of Survival.

Review
Survival begins with 2 high school students, Todd and Crystal who have been selected to go to Cambridge University to compete for a full four- year scholarship, which is great until a disaster approaches. The plane in which they are passengers crashes, leaving only the 2 students alive. These two students coming from different social classes, having only each other and the resources around them on the deserted island, must stick together in this game of survival. After reading this book, I really sat and thought what it would really be like to be stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere with no civilization and no helpful resources such as a phone or any type of communication device. The descriptive words used in this book made it much easier to visualize the setting, which was really cool. I could totally feel the fear they felt not knowing if they would ever leave the island. I also liked how in the book, both students are from two different social classes, but had to put all of that behind when survival was at hand. The only thing I didn t like was the fact that Todd did not express his feelings to Crystal, I feel like they went through too much on that island for him not to express the way he felt about her, I felt as if maybe she kind of knew but he still should have expressed himself. My favorite character in the book was Todd. He reminds me of myself, no matter what you are dealing with, always try to keep your composure and that is exactly what he did. Todd remained calm through some of the toughest times, especially right after the accident when he thought he was alone, before he discovered Crystal. He cared for her and made her feel comfortable the entire time they were on the island. In conclusion, Survival is a very visual, exciting, adventurous book to read that will have your mind traveling along with it. It is a great read and I encourage anyone who likes a good book to read it. --Martavaian Mann

Survival is about two high school students Crystal Blake and Todd Barrington, who are from two completely different social groups. Crystal has the title for the prettiest girl at school and besides of her looks she comes from a wealthy family. On the other hand, Todd is a shy person who is very good with his hands. Crystal and Todd both selected to go to Cambridge University , to compete for a full four-year scholarship. Before their journey could truly began a turn for the worst happen. Running into a storm, on their way to Cambridge University , the plane had to do an emergency landing, leaving Crystal and Todd the only two alive. I would have to say my favorite character in the book was Todd. Because Todd was always, the perfect gentleman no matter what situation they ran into. Throughout the story, it seem like he always caught himself saving Crystal, from the time of the crash to the snake bit on her leg. Todd never stops caring about her. While they were there on the island, Todd did anything to make the campsite as livable for Crystal as much as he could. The only thing I did not like was that Todd never told Crystal how he felt. What I liked about this book is that it was easy to imagine all the events that took place within the plot. In addition, it taught me to go speak what is on my mind, because I might ever have the chance to say what I may want to say. What I did not like was how he put Crystal as a person who could not do much. It seems to me that he was trying to say that a woman could not do anything without a man s help. Over all if you like love and suspense books, you will like this book. I give it 4 ½ stars. --Kayla Rogers

This story is about two teenagers who developed a strong relationship, during a crisis. Todd Barrington was a seventeen year old high school junior. He was the type of person who didn't make a lot of friends because of the way he dressed or because he didn't have a lot of money. On the other hand, Crystal Blake was the most popular girl in school. She was very pretty, and she was a member of the cheerleading squad. Todd and Crystal attended the same school and never said a word to each other. They didn't have anything in common, except they both were smart. The two juniors were called to the office because they had been selected to visit the most prestigious Cambridge University for a chance to receive a four-year scholarship. This was very exciting for the teens, but the only catch was that they had to pay eight hundred dollars to attend the trip. This was no problem for Crystal because her parents were wealthy. Todd, on the other hand, wasn't as fortunate as Crystal. Todd became very stressed because he didn't know how he would come up with the money. Crystal secretly had a crush on Todd, but she didn't want anybody to know because of her reputation at school. Crystal had a big heart because she knew Todd didn't have the money for the trip, so she took money from her trust fund to pay his fee. Todd was very excited when he heard his fee had been paid anonymously. The teens boarded the plane expecting to have the time of their lives. They were going to meet teens from other countries and would be able to experience a new culture. This trip that was planned to be exciting turned into a disaster. The plan course had led them into a terrible storm, which caused the plane to crash. After the plane crashed, Todd thought he was the only survivor, but Crystal had also survived. These two immediately thought they were going to starve to death. Todd immediately took a brave role. He tended to Crystal's wounds from the crash. While the two were on this deserted island for a year, Todd made sure the two of them had food, water, and shelter. He made this tragedy feel more comfortable. The two teenagers had never exchanged words until this happened. They had become the best of friends and actually fell in love with each other. Their friendship had become such a tight bond because they started to feel as if they couldn't live without each other. Todd was such a brave young man. He didn't just make sure he and Crystal ate for a whole year but he risked his life so they could return home to their families. My favorite part of the book was when Todd risked his life and was captured by the smugglers. Todd had a plan the whole time he was being captured by the smugglers. Todd blew the vessel up and the fire was the reason for Crystal being rescued. My other favorite part of the book was when Crystal returned to the island because she thought Todd had died in the explosion, and she didn't want her friend's grave to be under water. When Crystal arrived on the island, she discovered that Todd wasn't dead and he left her a message in the sand that said, "Crystal I Survived I Love You." I am not a person who likes to read but I would read this book repeatedly. This book actually brought tears to my eyes. I would recommend this book to anybody because it is very touching, and it makes you realize that some things shouldn't be taken for granted. --Latia Alexander

The book survival is about two high school students by the names of Crystal Blake and Todd Barrington. Some interesting little facts about the two are basically that they both are from two different worlds. Crystal for one is from a more wealthy family and is the more outgoing, pretty and popular girl while Todd on the other hand is somewhat of a shy guy who is very good with his hands. What brings these two together is a chance to compete for a full four year ride to Cambridge University. Before either student had the chance to compete in such a wonderful experience, their exciting journey turned into an awful nightmare. While headed to the university, their plane encountered a horrible storm which caused the plan to make an emergency landing killing everyone, but Crystal and Todd. While being able to read this novel I really enjoyed the thrill and dramatic scenes that I came across. I especially enjoyed learning more about the character Todd seeing how he was out of his comfort zone, mainly being around such a beautiful girl and being able to help her out as well as for his self. He seemed like the perfect guy and gentlemen towards Crystal which is shocking to me. For these two young students being able to at least survive without any type of communication or help from others is amazing. I personally would recommend this novel to anyone willing to read up on something different with a little edge and suspense to it. If I enjoyed it, I know anyone else would. --Ja'Sheia Gee

Outstanding
By Terrence Neal

I would like to start by say the novel "Survival", was one of the most interesting and intriguing novel I have read in a while. While most people would say it sounds like a story that has already been written, I say there is nothing else like it. At the beginning I was tossed around by the brilliant movie like plot when we went back and forth on how Todd and Crystal were in two different social groups. That's something that goes on in everyday life, as well as in schools across the world. This can teach people many life lessons on how they should never prejudge anyone on how they were raised or their social stability. With Crystal being the most popular female on their high school campus Todd would've never thought there would be a time where he and crystal would have to depend on each other to survive. I might have jumped a little far but I will catch you up on it. Todd and Crystal were chosen to go compete for a four -year scholarship to a major academic institution "Cambridge University". Todd being to poor young man he was had no support from his parents for the cost of the ordeal so, Crystal being Todd undercover lover didn't want him to miss out on the opportunity of a life time. The trip cost was $800 that was little money to Crystals' family. The day came for them to leave and everything was going as planned until the plane the two were on veered off course because of a bad storm. The plane eventually crashed and the pilots did not make it, so the two seven-teen year old kids had to fin for themselves for almost a year until one day smugglers came to the island. The smugglers as everyone know are no good people found their camping sight and Todd knew they were going to find them any way so he stood up and let them take him instead of Crystal. The smugglers took Todd back to their main ship, the last thing Crystal heard was the ship being blown up. With the thought of Todd killing himself for her all she could think about was how she should've told him how much she loved him a how thankful she was for him saving her life. That's another life story this book shows; never hold in your feelings about anything or anyone if it can have a positive impact in their lives. I don't want to tell the ending of the story so I'll leave that up to whoever chooses to purchase this great novel.

MY VIEW OF THE BOOK "SURVIVAL"
By Monterius Rush
As I began to read the book Survival I really started to enjoy it more because I noticed some interesting things about the book that I could definitely relate to. I remember back in high school and there was this girl I had a serious crush on and did not know how to approach her. She was so gorgeous that I thought she was the prettiest girl alive. After I gained enough guts to talk to her when began dating and became high school sweethearts during our senior year of high school. In the book there were these two high school students Todd Barrington and Crystal Blake. Todd is a very shy dude who is very good with his hands. Crystal is very pretty and comes from a family that has a lot of money. Todd and Crystal are both selected to go to Cambridge University to compete for a full four-year scholarship. One there way there on a plane they end up in a terrible storm which causes them to have to land being the only ones left alive from the flight.
My favorite character is Todd because he reminds me so much of myself start off shy and is the type of person who is determined and dedicated to get what he wants. He is a perfect gentle just like me. He has a caring heart and is willing to save the one he likes such as when she got bit by the snake. Even when they were on the island he was always willing to make sure she was comfortable and also by helping her to feel like she can make it through on the island! My overall opinion of the book gets 5stars. I absolutely have a craving on books that has love in it!

Survival Review: A Great Book for Young Adults
By Chip
The novel Survival by Roger Grubbs was a great read. I would recommend this book to someone who wanted something quick and easy to read. I am normally a very slow reader, but I was able to finish the book in two days and most people could finish it in one day. It doesn't take long to read this book, only because you can't put it down once you start reading it. I also liked the book because you did not have to think too hard about it, but this did not take away from the fact that it was a great book. Although I enjoyed reading this book, I found the plot to be a little predictive. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story, but I just feel that the way it was presented could become repetitive and slightly boring. While the average adult would get tired of hearing the same phrases over and over again, I think that a high school student would enjoy it. While I enjoyed the story overall, I was actually disappointed with the ending because it just leaves you hanging. You can easily guess what happens later, but I really wanted there to be another chapter to the book. I am not sure how I can describe the story without giving it completely away, but I feel that the message of the story is to express how two people from complete opposite sides of the social circle come together when they are put into a dangerous situation. The one thing that I find to be funny is that Todd and Crystal like each other the whole time, but neither one of them want to hold anything back because they don't think that the other feels the same way. But in the end, there is the happy ending that everyone wants out of a story. Even though I predicted that there would be a happy ending, I had no idea that it would play out the way it did. Just in the last few pages, I went from happy to sad and then back to happy. This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster and you will be maddened by the fact that they will not tell one another that they are in love, but everything works out in the end.

Monsieur: An Erotic Novel, by Emma Becker

What sort of woman has a taste for middle-aged, married men? Ellie, twenty years old and living in Paris, leads a light and carefree life until she meets “Mister”—a married surgeon approaching middle age. Beginning with their frenzied affair in a hotel room in the fifteenth arrondissement, Monsieur details the clandestine Tuesday morning hotel meetings and fleeting phone calls spanning several months of sexual adventure. Generous with her body and never lacking erotic imagination (or partners—men and women), Ellie illuminates her deviations in a lucid, ferocious, and passionate tale.

Often shocking but never gratuitous, Monsieur is, paradoxically, a coming-of-age story—her seduction of the married man and its devastating aftermath leaving Ellie older and wiser than she once was after their four-month affair comes to its unpredictable conclusion.  At once a novel-confession and a description of the descent from passion to cruel fantasy, this is the disenchantment of a contemporary Lolita.

Book Review from The Bibliotaphe Closet: Monsieur by Emma Becker
By Zara Garcia-Alvarez
Monsieur by Emma Becker will strangle you into its story of erotic passion that started as a young woman's naive and rebellious curiosity that slowly and thickly becomes a lethal, emotional, and lustful obsession.

It's a story of 20-something-year-old Ellie, a "nymphet," of who she describes in the fictional work, "Lolita" by Nabakov--the title, too, is the opening sentence of the first chapter of the book, which should elicit or at least allude to the passion and erotica to come in the novel (no pun intended--well... maybe a little)--and her all-consuming affair with her married lover, a man twenty-five years her senior who she affectionately refers to as, Monsieur.

And while the name in itself, "Monsieur," denotes a sense of maturity, propriety, or even a formal politeness or regality; the character referred to as "Monsieur," is anything but (again, no pun intended and yet, you will need to read the book to understand exactly what I mean--the word "arse" is not only repeated numerous times in the text, but is a focus of delight and fascination by the perverse and lustful character of Monsieur).

This is no light romance of youthful fancy and sentimental imaginings. Readers of innocent and inexperienced youth, the blushing, shy, and embarrassed prudes of moral superiority and those who detest or fear sexual deviancy should not read this book. The context of Monsieur and Ellie's affair is sordid, crude, and highly brazen. Like the book. Like the narrative.

PAST COMMENT IS UNFAIR !
By Sophie
WHY do you compare this book with Fifty Shades of Grey??
That's an aberration.
Emma Becker's story was written before FSoG and this is a story which did happen in Emma's life, FOR REAL. That's the big difference!
Fifty Shades of Grey is a fake romance story and what I like to call pornography for virgins while MONSIEUR was written by a young student in French literature who was living a genuine and unique love story with an older man. They share a true passion for erotic literature (you can find strong references).
Her style is very dense, rich, poetic and raw.
E.L.James' style is poor, repetitive and boring (with a ridiculous obsession with luxury).
I read MONSIEUR in French (as a French) and I was bewitched by this book and the uniqueness of this true story.

Why so unfair with this book? There is no link between MONSIEUR and FSoG.
The first one is true literature with a solid style while the second is a story for young women who do NOT care about the quality of the writing.

PS : excuse my English.

Heart breaking
By Pen Name
I randomly stumbled across this book and it became a firm favourite. I don't believe it's anything like Fifty Shades - as entertaining as Fifty Shades was, it would be an insult to Monsieur to compare the two.

Monsieur is incredibly well written in the sense that you are able to feel every emotion of the narrator. When her heart breaks, your heart will break too. There is a grittiness to the book which will stay with you.

I have recommend this book to many people and continue to do so
