So much more than just "Over the Rainbow"
By Jocelyn Price
Even if he never wrote anything else, Harold Arlen earned a stellar position in the Great American Songbook for writing "Over the Rainbow", as well as the other songs from "The Wizard of Oz". But he wrote so many more wonderful songs, ranging from the happiest and most light-hearted melodies to songs of nearly-operatic power. Sopranos, in particular, should look at this collection, which contains "Blues in the Night", "I Had Myself a True Love", and "I Wonder What Became of Me". The arrangements in this book are quite full, although a professional accompanist could make more of them, and the keys are singable. It is one of the staples of my popular music library. Harold Arlen's work is often associated with Judy Garland, but I think Eileen Farrell is actually the absolute best interpreter of his songs. Look for her CDs titled "Eileen Farrell Sings Harold Arlen" and "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues". They will blow you away, and maybe change your perception of what great singing can be.

Harold Arlen Piano Solos
By CGIsackson
The Harold Arlen Songbook by Hal Leonard Piano - Vocal - Guitar.

I love this book! All 304 pages of it.

I am pleased with its quality, its thoroughness, and best of all, the exciting tunes that I never expected to find. I bought this book just for one title that was linked to this book in Bing.com - "Blues In The Night". Doing jazz and blues, I suspected this tune needed to be in my set. So I went to Amazon, bought the book and hoped for the best, and what a happy surprise when it came in the mail.

I have to admit that I hardly knew about Harold Arlen until last week (6/21/12). I am ashamed, but am making up for years of not knowing his music or the man. Just as the intro in the book says, "You wrote that, too?", which was exactly my response - OVER THE RAINBOW, STORMY WEATHER (presented here in its complete form), GET HAPPY, BLUES IN THE NIGHT, COME RAIN OR COME SHINE, IT'S ONLY A PAPER MOON ......

Anyone wanting a great set of really nice tunes to play should check this book out.

Here is the list of all the Arlen tunes in the book. They include the vocal and the piano and the piano portion DOES NOT NEED to be accompanied by the vocal piece to produce the wonderful impression of this great artist. Each piece has a note of which musical it is from and there is a great biography and a thorough time line of all his 'tunes'. To top it off, there are eight photos of Mr. Arlen - one with his dog Shmutts, and another interesting one with Ira Gershwin (I though Stormy Weather was a Gershwin tune until now). The very last page has a picture of Harold and his wife, Anya in 1935 - Really a cool '30s-looking couple.

Here are all the tunes just so you can see if this is your cup of tea:

Great Songbook
By R. Ayars
This is a wonderful anthology of Harold Arlen songs. Since he wrote over 400 songs, it's impossible to include them all, but the best are definitely represented here. If you want to learn an Arlen song, this is the source.
