Bernstein's Young People's Concert on DVD

This DVD series was, and still is a classic opportunity to examine facets of music as either an adult, or a child. The concerts were held for school children of elementary through high school age, as you can see in video shots of the audience and chaperones in attendance. Mr. Bernstein brings his background as a conductor and composer to life in simple yet effective ways to examine topics like 'what is music'. He explores form, styles, composers and a wealth of information regarding specific pieces of music and how they came to be from the minds of the composers who wrote them. The booklet that accompanies give suggestions how to develop and educational 'portfolio' if this is used in the classroom, enabling students to think about their perceptions of music and to develop a vocabulary for describing music. Of course, the clothing and the black and white rendering does show that this dates from the 1950's, but there is not another conductor in history who has given this depth of discussion to music which is understandable by, and available to young people today. Highly recommended to anyone who is teaching music, studying music or wanting to get more appreciation for music.

It doesn't matter how well you may know (or think you know) a piece of music. The explanations offered to the "young people" are educational and entertaining for all.
