Farm Hands: Hard work and hard lessons from Western New York fields, by Tom Rivers

Tom Rivers, a reporter for The Daily News in Batavia, wrote a first-person series about farm work in 2008 that won state and national awards. Now the series, with more background and other information, has been compiled in a newly released book, Farm Hands: Hard work and hard lessons from Western New York fields.

Rivers worked at a dozen farms in Orleans and Genesee counties, trying to find out why so few local residents are willing to work on farms. He discovered the work requires many skills, enormous willpower and physical strength.
Rivers knew the jobs would be hard, but he didn’t realize just how grueling. He also didn’t expect the workers to help him get through the difficult work days.

Rivers, 35, lost 40 pounds in 2008, and whipped himself into good enough shape to run a marathon. He compared that 26.2-mile run with cabbage cutting, and declared the farm work far more exhausting.

The newspaper series, which the book is adapted from, won national honors from the North American Agricultural Journalists and Columbia Journalism School. The Associated Press also recognized the series for “in-depth reporting” and the New York Agricultural Society presented Rivers with a “golden pitchfork” for the project.

A fresh perspective on the tired immigration debate
By Scott John Ensign
I confess to being someone who has, at times, been swayed by the angry rhetoric surrounding the issue of illegal immigration. However, I tuned out the debate long ago. It's easy for me to do. I don't live in border state, and I'm not exposed to the issue on a daily basis in my cozy suburban cocoon.

Reading Farm Hands forced me to take another look, though. Reporter Tom Rivers artfully dodges the political landmines by making a bee line right to the heart of the labor issue. He spends some real, quality time in the fields with migrant farm laborers in rural Western New York's Orleans and Genesee counties. What he finds are real people from Mexico, Haiti and Jamaica who are putting their bodies through stress that most people can't even imagine in the hope of finding a better life. These people aren't villains (although every nationality, race and ethnic group has its share); they're people who should remind us what it means to be American.

Farm hands is an easy and enjoyable read. While it's basically a collection of human interest articles that Rivers wrote for the Batavia Daily News, it hangs together nicely and reads very much like a linear, chronological story. Growing up around dairy farms and farmers as a pastor's kid in rural Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the stories of the farms have some special significance to me. I even spent a couple of summers as a young teenager picking strawberries to make a few bucks. I can relate to the passages about the mental aspect of the job, even though I only worked for a few hours a day a few weeks out of the year. This stuff is truly grueling work.

I continue to believe that we need common sense immigration reform. Sure, we need secure borders, but we also need a system that allows willing workers to work for farmers who desperately need them without fear of being arrested and shipped home. The notion that migrant workers are stealing jobs from willing Americans dissolves quickly in the warm summer rains of Lyndonville, NY's cabbage fields. Rivers reports that farmers there have faithfully advertised in the local papers for field help, going at least two decades without a single response from a local.

But beyond the tired debates and transparent political posturing of the immigration issue, this book made me take a good, hard look at myself. For me, America has always been more than a place to live; it's an ideal defined by hard work, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, and applying yourself in the hopes of a better life. I look at the sense of entitlement that defines our culture today, and then I take an honest look in the mirror. "These people," as Rivers affectionately calls them, are, in a sense, more American than I will ever be. That's not a politically popular thing to say, but what do I care? I tuned out that noise a long time ago.

Farm Hands

Read a review of this book in the Buffalo News and though I would pick it up since I went to school in Batavia and know the area. What a great book! Imagine farmers advertising for jobs and no Americans take these brutal, dirty jobs. Next time I eat cabbage, it will be with a new appreciation of what hard work it took to bring to my table.

No matter what your opinion is of immigration, this book will give you a great perspective of migrant farmers. I really enjoyed the stories of the workers and how difficult farmwork really is. Very impressed with the insight in this book. Rivers writes from an honest perspective with real heart. I would recommend it to friends and give it as a gift. Loved it!
