From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Actor Simon Callow tackles one of Roald Dahl's most gruesome stories (Puffin, pap. 1998) with relish in this gleefully naughty audiobook. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are two of the most disgusting, nasty, and horrid characters in children's literature, from their repulsive looks (the story opens with a long, detailed description of Mr. Twit's unkempt beard) to the mean and horrible tricks they play on one another (Mrs. Twit enjoys hiding her glass eyeball in unexpected places and lacing the spaghetti with worms; Mr. Twit works for weeks to convince his wife that she has "The Shrinks"). Callow captures the dry humor of Dahl's narrative voice perfectly, and creates appropriately nasty voices for Mr. and Mrs. Twit as well. Unfortunately, the thick accents and loud tones of these voices often mean that the dialogue is difficult to understand. Still, Callow's able narration brings Dahl's ironic sensibilities to life, and a sense of satisfaction is inevitable when the terrible Twits come to an appropriately gruesome end.

The BFG was a WOW!
By Paul Bakos
I am a ten-year old girl and I thought The BFG was a great book. I loved how some of the chapters made me laugh out loud. It was a very creative book and I always looked forward to reading it. I've read many books and The BFG was definitely one of my favorites. I decided to read The BFG because I saw an advertisement on TV for the movie. I'm glad I did! I would definitely -and no question about it- recommend it to a friend!

A classic that is still very modern
By M. T. Crenshaw
Matilda is a modern tale that has many elements of the old folk European stories, with angelical vs evil people who you immediately love and hate, and an air of defiance of the adult world that hooks up children. What separates Matilda from old fairy tales is that, despite the character being a female heroine, the story doesn't want to turn her into a princess, into a girlfriend, or into a male character's attachment. Matilda is brilliant because she is an individual and knows what she wants.

The book speaks about the importance of family values and being brought up properly, and about the the importance of your willpower and education to overcome any struggle and become your best self. Also, you get in life whatever your intention and willpower put to it.

The book reads effortlessly and fast, and it is truly enjoyable. A classic of children literature, and very important to reinforce positive female roles in a world that wants to turn little girls into little empty dolls.

I like Quentin Blake's illustrations style but they don't resonate with me with regards to Matilda, perhaps because I imagine Matilda very different from the character we find drawn in the book. This is a personal preference of course.

~~ A classic that never ages! ~~
By Richard and Liz
Purchased in the Paperback version this copy of Matilda is written in British English with illustrations from one of the best, Quentin Blake. Matilda was never wanted. Her parents were too wrapped up in their own lives to care for another human being thus Matilda was left to her own devices at a very young age. Her mother played bingo every afternoon allowing Matilda time to read and pursue her own education. Her father was a definite crook, dealing in used cars, "fixing" them up and selling at a huge profit.

If you ever want to instill the love of reading in your child, then Matilda is a GREAT example as at the age of 4 she was already reading the classics by Dickens, Bronte, Kipling etc.

Increasingly angry at the treatment she was receiving from her parents she "decided that every time her father or mother were beastly to her, she would get her own back in some way or other. A small victory or two would help her tolerate their idiocies and would stop her from going crazy." Smile and laugh as she gets her own back!

What happens when Matilda is finally allowed to go to school? How will she fare against the formidable Trunchbull? What of her "magic" powers? The Chokey?! Thank goodness Miss Honey, her teacher, saw Matilda's potential.

This is truly a delightful and humorous story that should be in everyone's library. The illustrations are fantastic, in true Quentin Blake style. I would encourage everyone to read the book first BEFORE watching the movie. We purchased this book at full price. We were not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
