About the Author
Karina Urbach is currently researching at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. She is also a senior research fellow at the Institute for Historial Research, University of London. She has a PhD from Cambridge University and has published several books on nineteenth and twentieth century history, including Bismarck's Favourite Englishman. Lord Odo Russell's Mission to Berlin (2000) and a biography of Queen Victoria. Her most recent book is Secret Intelligence and the International Relations of Europe in the 20th Century (2013), co-edited with Jonathan Haslam. She has also contributed to several TV documentaries, and was the historical advisor for PBS/BBC Royal Cousins at War (2014). She is based in Princeton, NJ.

Go-Betweens for Hitler

Much has been made of World War One and how it was a war between cousins (George V, Kaiser Wilhelm and Tsar Nicholas). It has become almost rather trite that any book coming out on the matter delve into that matter.
What Urbach does is build on that somewhat. Revealing how borders and ideologies were bridged by a social construct that many would have you believe disappeared when World War One swept across Europe and toppled so many of the royal and noble institutions. However one of the most interesting aspect of Urbach's work here is how strong, particularly among the losing side of WWI, the aristocratic element remained. And how many of such individuals found Nazism appealing. To the point of eagerly becoming the Go-Betweens for Hitler.
Overall I found it very interesting. Urbach does a good job of breaking down individuals and giving detailed accounts of each. However I did find that Urbach gives a bit too much background in showing how this notion of Go-betweens among the royal and noble houses of Europe played, or tried to play peacemakers or power-players in the first World War. Usually to dismal results. More than a third, maybe even half when you discount the notes, index, etc, is devoted to World War One or the more immediate pre-Hitler years. It is fascinating stuff. But the impact of Hitler and the rise to power of the Nazis seems to almost get short shift here.
But Urbach does a great job of peeling back the post-WWII facades of seeming benign players who were able to rewrite their rather hideous roles as Nazis. And some rather sacred cows get a bit of a tipping, if by proxy. I'm talking the British Royal Family. There is not scathing indictment but it does candidly look at what is available on some members and, perhaps more interestingly, what is not available.
All in all, this is a wonderful study of not only overlooked elements in WWII history and history of the Nazis, but in how the nobility/aristocracy managed to transition and keep their privileged status even through another cataclysmic war.

Go-Betweens for Hitler

Although this book is titled, “Go-Betweens for Hitler,” it actually covers a much longer period than just the years when Hitler was in power and looks at the role of European aristocracy from before the first world war until after the second. The aristocracy had international links through marriage and family which made them extremely useful in diplomatic relations. This is perfectly demonstrated in WWI, with the Tsar of Russia, the German Kaiser and the British King all being first cousins. Indeed, often those in the ruling families were forced to choose sides and, even if they did fight for one side or the other (even if most had links to both) were viewed by suspicion by those around them and their loyalty questioned. Bolshevism was, obviously, the enemy of the aristocracy and bolshevism the reason why aristocratic go-betweens were active in the inter-war years.
This book is an intriguing look at the shadowy role of go-betweens in politics and diplomacy. It is obviously hard to research a world where the inhabitants carry out their roles in secret, but some of the characters in this book are so larger than life it is difficult to imagine them carrying out anything in secrecy. When Hitler first came to power he preferred to bypass bureaucracy and ran and implement his policy by way of confidantes. He distrusted the professional diplomats already in place and was, it has to be said, not entirely immune to the glamour of ‘old’ names. Hermann Goring targeted and cultivated aristocrats and they were involved in many aspects of diplomacy in the war years.
The Duke of Coburg was one such convert to Hitler. He claimed that he just wanted to feel ‘useful’ again, but many aristocrats were anti-Semitic and all too willing to listen to Hitler’s ranting about the Jews, who were identified with liberalism, socialism and bolshevism and resented by the old families of Europe. The Duke of Coburg offered Hitler important contacts within Germany and travelled to Japan, America and Europe, networking on Hitler’s behalf. After 1945 he simply stepped back into the role of an English gentleman and so many aristocrats, with family ties throughout Europe, could also change identity as it suited them.
This then is the story of the characters that acted as go-betweens in Europe. Hitler spent a great deal of time cultivating the British establishment and, with a dangerously indiscreet Edward VIII on the throne and many British aristocrats attracted to radical right wing ideas, it is not surprising. Certainly, after the abdication, Hitler hoped to offer the Duke of Windsor his throne back and, presumably, a crown for Wallis – before the couple were removed out of harm’s way for the duration of the war.
This book is full of such intrigues and shadowy characters; from the wonderfully named Princess Stephanie Hohenlohe, who rose from humble beginnings and, despite being half-Jewish, was working for Hungary’s head of state, Admiral Horthy, Hitler, Goring and the press baron Lord Rothermere. Or the even more wonderfully titled, Prince Max Egon zu Hohenlohe Langenburg whose affiliations were equally vague – rumoured to be working for Ribbentrop, Canaris, Goring or Himmler during his time as a go-between. This is the story of a secret form of diplomacy and of ties throughout Europe which were those of kinship and family and which politicians used to their advantage to sound out those in power secretly. A fascinating read and extremely well written, this is an enjoyable book about a little investigated aspect of the years surrounding the two world wars. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
